My kids had water pistols and such but I never bought them toy guns. They were all taught that guns are not toys.
They played "finger gun" of course and they got BB guns at age 5 or 6.

How many years have they had RED CAPS on the muzzle of the squirt guns?
That's to make it LESS likely the cops will cap you when you point it at them.
I prefer to teach my kids not to point guns at the cops.

I didn't raise a son, so I never thought about your reason for not giving them toy guns. I never considered giving my daughter a cap pistol.
Seems to make sense, but I sure had fun with my toy guns and I think I turned out ok.

We had a suicide by cop this weekend using a pellet gun. In this neck of the woods it's been years since a perp was shot, much less dead over a pellet gun. Yes sad for sure BUT just more fodder.
