    7.62 Nato/308 M1 garand question

    Hello.
    Am new to this forum.
I have an M1 SA Garand that I have had rebarreled to .308. I also have a supply on .308 NM LC 02 ammo. Can I shoot this in my .308 Garand W/O problems?

I also have a few hundred Federal 308 match factory ammo. Is this also ok to shoot in my Garand W/O damage to the OP rod?

Added to that is 100 rds of LC 64 ammo. Is this ok also?

    Thanks in advance.

Depends on the gas port in the barrel. They come in several sizes. If the hole is 30-06 size it probably will have a hard time with the LC. If the hole was punched out the Federal may be too much. Punch the hole out to the largest size and use an adjustable gas plug and you'll be golden. Tim knows the exact drill bit sizes. I don't remember.

Is it commercial M1 (SA inc.) or a converted USGI rifle? I have a commercial version in .308 and it digests NATO ammo with no issues. But, the barrel was manufactured for .308 from the get-go.

This is a new barrel I've had installed.

I'm leaning to fine on all accounts. You may not cycle some stuff but I doubt you'll have any issues with the hotter stuff. If you want to really do yourself a big favor, spend $35 and get you a Schuster gas lock screw. Tell Matt down there I said hello.

Yes And Yes. The Garand was made to take the pressures of the 06 and the 308 is like a 22 short in a rifle chambered for 22LR. I have a 308 Garand and when I first shoot it and am focused when the gun goes off I feel like it malfunctioned because of the lack of 06 recoil. I am assuming you are using a 308 barrel and not a 06 cut down for 308.

The new 308 barrels I have bought have the same size hole as the M14/M1A. This works with them because they have the short-stroke tappet principle which requires less gas pressure. To make it work for a Garand, you have to drill out the gas port hole with a #39 drill.
