    Newbie wanting veterans opinion....

    Howdy Guys,

I love the Garand but I have had quite a few accuracy problems that I wasnt able to solve with my CMP guns over the last few years. I got frustrated and sold most of them off, and bought black rifles and russian brides with the proceeds.

I live behind enemy lines in the state of kalipornia and after my LT Gov idiotic support for a gun control measure that hasn't even brought to the legislature yet, I am thinking of selling all of the Magazine fed Semi Auto rifles I may or may not own and buy into CMP again. Then send them off to Tim for this fantastic procedure he has perfected, in order to secure my homestead.

So my question is this.... is the control-ability of the mini g increased by re-barreling to .308? Is re-barreling worth the added costs to the project considering all the Greek HXP that can be bought and stored for future use??

Should I order my Mini Gs in .308? Thanks for the help guys!

    Plus 30/06
If you have the ammo, it's cheap
    cheaper to build
    Can be more dependable

    Minus 30/06
    More recoil
You'll lose the ammo advantage at some point, HXP will run out

    Plus .308
    Can shoot NATO or .308
    a little less recoil
with a brake it's a cream puff but when you have a brake you have more percussion. When I hunt, I wear a little cotton in my ears when using a brake.

    Minus .308
    more expensive build
    can be less reliable

The reliability issue is simple, the round has 1/2" to move further than a 30/06 round. That's a 1/2" more for something to go wrong and the round to strike the chamber face instead of chambering. 30/06 can have this issue too but it is more prevalent with .308, in my opinion. Everything just has to be that much more in sync with .308/NATO.

Frankly, for myself, I like .308 these days.

I am not sure why you had accuracy problems with CMP rifles unless you bought the lowest grades or its being a unexperinced high power shooter. Garands are not match rifles but War rifles.
As far as 30.06 vs 308 thats a coin toss .
I cant comment on the Mini G but as far as full sized Garands my Navy 7.62 is one of my favorite rifles to shoot

I was getting vertical stringing issues. Bad. Out of an 8 rd clip I would have the first two shots pretty close to target on 200Yrd steel knock down targets. Then I would have one or two shots 2ft high maybe one on target and then a couple of shots falling 25yrs short of the target, then back on target for a few rd. All without changing point of aim. I have handed off two different guns to multiple shooters in order to remove my ability or lack there of from the equation. I Have gotten this with the last 2 Garands I have shot and I was very disappointed on two fronts, One that I sold a gun that wasn't worn out (like I was told by my Buddies) and two that I have this issue again with another gun. Everything I read was that I have a Stock problem and it needed to be inletted. So I have done that, but I havent been back to the range yet to check my progress.

I know Im not a professional high power shooter. And I know these CMP rifles aren't match rifles. But I expect to be able to hit a "Deer" sized target at 200yrd. I need to have that amount of accuracy. And a Garand should provide that. Am I wrong about that??

Thanks Musketjon, Im still on the fence about what I should do with that lol. With the amount of rifles I want worked on a caliber change will add a lot of money to the end result.

I think that .308 ammo will be more available in the years to come as opposed to the 30-06. The recoil from both are just about the same-same bullet weight and same muzzle velocity=same recoil.
