Rainy day forecast found me hunting close to the house at my lease.
Made it to my spot and got settled in. The woods were graveyard quiet with the exception of a couple of gobblers, down and across the river, who were responding to my calls early.
I had just closed my eyes for a short siesta and I heard a gobble to my right ~150+ out. Over the course of the next 10 minutes they gobbled at me, at each other, at crows, and at a boat cruising up river (basically every sound in the woods).
They ran up and proceeded to flog the daylights out of my jake decoy. After beating up on the competition the dominant bird hopped up in the hen and tried to get a little action. His head was exposed between the v of a tree while the other was shielded. It was the first chance I had to prevent killing them both so I squeezed the trigger and ended his romantic endeavor.
The subordinate bird was given a promotion to big dog.
Pictures to follow after I resize them. Wet turkeys do not make for pretty pictures though.
