We have several ready to go. Each is packed with everything from a small campstove to food rations for a week. Have another go bag just full of ammo and some nice toys to set up a security permiter.

Here is my primary pack. I used this last year and spent 3 weeks on the trail. Lots of room and with the cover is waterproof. All packed and ready to roll. WIth food the weiight can run around 60 LBS.

If money is a concern a large surplus Alice pack is the way to go. You can find them cheap since we stopped issuing them a few years ago for the Molle and if you have to hump it for a while you will be thankful for the frame. Any bag that would be uncomfortable after a few miles is a bad idea. You can add pouches to it if you need more space and I have succesfully waterproofed them with silicone waterproofing spray in a can to the point that they will almost hold water if they didn't have drain holes in the bottom. In fact you could get them in smaller sizes for the kids and wife if it ever got Really bad.
