A buddy and I went out last week to try out some reloads in his .308 cop rifle. I had worked up three different loads with the bullet he wanted to shoot. The best three-shot group he shot was just under an inch at 100 yds. (44grs IMR 4064, Sierra 168 gr HPBT) The factory stuff he warmed up with wasn't even close, but maybe that was just him.

So, the question....is 1 inch at 100 yds "good enough" for those of you who target shoot?

Yes. For most every form of target shooting 2 MOA is acceptable with the exception of F-Class. Now if you buddy was using a "sniper rifle" with a scope he should have laid one bullet on top of another all the way to 300 yards.

All depends, just shooting for fun?
I dont shoot competatively , just shoot against myself trying to improve every trip to the range. With my Scoped Armalite 223 and Hornady Match ammo I consider 10 rds under a inch a good group. To me three rds isnt enough to tell what a rifle and the shooter can really do

For me, it depends on the type of rifle. If I'm shooting an old '98 Mauser, I don't mind a 2 or 3-inch group, or larger. Something like an SKS, I don't expect much better than 4-5" at 100 yards on average. If I'm shooting my .220 Swift for groups, I expect 1/4" or less with handloads, as that's what it will do on a regular basis, but it's also bedded, the barrel is floated, and has aluminum pillars.

Back when I was shooting in 100-yard benchrest matches, overall, the most popular rig with the group was a heavy-barreled Remington 788 in .308, and $1000+ scopes. I pissed a lot of them off, and won a lot of matches, with Grandpa's $350 M700 in .270 Win, that had a $200 Leupold 6x sitting on top. ;)

My 700PSS is ammo sensitive. Shoots under 1 moa, often better with match ammo. Group opens up to 3" or worse with cheap stuff. As far as iron sights go, I really suck as I can't see the target that well anymore. I consider a 6-8" group acceptable for me. If I get Lasik maybe things will improve.
