I have this up for sale on CMP,and I was told it is IHC,but I haven't a clue.Someone there said it was a WW2 wide base, but I was under the impression that WW2 wide base had the dimple behind the stacking swivel and a punch mark.I was also told before that Some IHC had the number marks on the ring flat, and that it was assumed to be a machinist's mark...what say You?

btw,the rear sight is much wider than My WRA sight, and has a knurled screw.

That looks just like the one I saw on the CMP.
That guy said it was an "IHC".

Ryan,

I'm leaning towards saying the gas cylinder is a WWII SA.

The staking marks on the stacking swivel looks like WWII SA to me. Babcock shows a picture of a WWII SA wide base in his book, flat on the rear ring and no punch mark. He says they are seen on 1.81M to 2.5M rifles.

The front sight does look like an IHC to me.

By the way, IHC did not put letters or numbers on the flat part of the ring or the bayo lug.

Thanks Wayne.
So what are the wide base with the dimple behind the swivel?

Ryan,

Babcock says they are the next SA version and seen from around 2.3M to end of WWII production.

So the two versions may have overlapped from 2.3M to 2.5M.

Ryan, I just looked at over a dozen gas cylinders. Some were shaped like that, one had that "football" look to the pad beneath the bayonet lug, 1 had the football look on one side, sort of 1/2 football, and the rest looked just like yours. None had the Springfield dimple. I was thinking HRA or IHC. As far as I'm concerned WRA and Springfield are an easy ID, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that a lot of Post War stuff was made by sub-contractors. Remember the Koreans were also in the mix, but their stuff usually had the round rear ring like the WRA.

Looking at the staking, it looks SA like Wayne said, but it's been re-staked so who knows if the screw is original to that cylinder.

Stu,yeah, unless it is a narrow base,or WRA,I'm not even going to try to ID anymore.

Wayne,Thanks so much.

Ryan,

One characteristic of IHC gas cylinders is concentric milling circles on the heads of the original stacking swivel screws:

Another is the "football" shape on the front side (muzzle side) of the bayo lug:

I can't tell from your pictures. Does yours have the concentric circles on the screw head?
