Shortly ago, It was nice to chat about my Garand and the possible mistake I made in purchasing it.
I really appreciate you taking the time to call about your concerns about said M1 and that you are willing to work with me on it.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on how things went with the testing today, Feel free to post up here or call again, If you wish, Maybe others can learn from some mistakes that were made :o
Thanks
Brian

Dear sir, I don't know that you made a mistake for 100% certain. The opinion I gave is just that, my opinion from seeing a few receivers that appeared as yours did. By the way, test firing with HXP went fine with no failures. It was indeed my pleasure to chat with you. Oh, will ship today after lunch.

Tim asked if it had ever been in a fire, I really couldn't answer that question, AFAIK it had not, He questioned about nit due to some plactic pieces dripping off the receiver, I did mention to him that I used an autobody rust inhibitor to knock out some rust, The rifle was a used by the Chinese at one point, the PO or someone managed to grind off a symbol on the LH side of the receiver, The barrel was badly pitted and looked like crap.
So Tims concerns were weather it would be a usable rifle or just a wall hanger due to the possability of a fire.
I did forget to mention that I did have the rifle completely a part other than removing the barrel, I ran most of the items through our ultrasonic to clean them up, I never noticed any plastic, That is why I think it was the rust inhibitor that was falling off.
here is my CMP post, If that is OK for a newb to link other sites?!?...

Looking at your photos the only area that looked like it did when I got it was the legs. Didn't see much detail for photos of collar and inside. Back to dinner :)

Tim.
Do you remember what the part was that was missing on my rear sight? You mentioned it was something to keep it tight, If I remember correctly.
Also are there any special cleaning procedures I should be considering with a new barrel?
I'm hoping to get to the range this weekend.
Thanks again.

Sir, you're missing the retaining clip inside the windage knob. It works fine, until you take it apart. Clean every shot for 16 shots, every clip for 10 clips, then, if you think it's safe to shoot, the barrel is fine.

Ok, I finally got to the range to break in the barrel.

What fun!
Here is my target, You can see me walking slowly walking the bullets down, Sadly, This is only 25 yards... I couldn't really see the black areas very well, Next time I will bring a spotting scope, I'm not quite sure what I had the sights set for, I used a laser bore sight to get me close.

The only real issue I had was that the en bloc wanted to eject after a shot from time to time, Then no for a full en bloc, Usually it started with the 3rd round, I do have a full set of new springs.
It looks like I have a little searching to do.
All in all I am very pleased.

Sounds good, I will swap it out and see how it goes.
It seemed to cycle well with the '69 Lake City ammo as well.
Thanks

That would be great!
I will PM you, I did a quick search, and I couldn't figure out what I was missing, With this being my first Garand.
Very cool, Thanks Mike.

C- clip is inbound as of this afternoon.
You can use a couple of small screw drivers to work the c clip in the groove and the windage knob if you are patient.

timshufflin
10-28-2011, 09:15 PM
It can be done, but you have to be patient. Of course, if you can't get er in, Standard Parts has an entire windage knob pretty cheap.
