Hi all.
Some of you may have seen my newly refurbed Garand.
I know it had some Chinese marking that the PO tried to remove, But after Tim Parkerized it they are visible again.
Where might I go to find out any info on them?

I believe that's Taiwanese markings saying "people's army".

On a serious note, (For all you jokers) much like we use the same alphabet to write English, Spanish, French or German, the Asians use Mandarin characters no matter what the language, so it would be hard to tell where that receiver had been. I would bet Korea.

Not true Herrmann. Korean characters are letters in an alphabet, while Chinese characters represent complete words and not letters. The Japanese are all screwed up because they use both! Back when I was young and semi-intelligent I actually earned a minor in Mandarin Chinese. Maybe it will help me get a manufacturing job some day.

I recently built and had Tim parkerize a IHC Gap Letter which had the exact same rub mark on the receiver. I didn't look for letters or markings, I figured it was where a op-rod rubbed against it in storage. I'll have a closer look at when I dig it out.

Do those characters reduce the value of the rifle like an import mark does?

You would think so but I think they are more of a oddity and I have seen some guys even looking for them

I had a receiver with similiar markings. I TOOK IT TO A CHINESE PERSON & HE SAID IT SAYS "ARMY",MOST LIKELY THE CHINESE NATIONALISTS THE US GAVE THEM MANY WEAPONS DURING THEIR CIVIL WAR, AND MANY WERE CAPTURED BY THE COMMUNISTS, AND USED IN THE kOREAN WAR. IT MOST LIKELY CAME FROM NATIONIST cHINA, BUT IT MIGHT BE A "RECAPTURED" m1 FROM kOREA.
