I have this early Drawing number marked Gas cylinder in My stuff, and I have a question about it's finish. The thing retains an almost complete uniform Dull Black finish, but in the spots where there is wear and dents, and then it looks like it has a thin copper coating underneath.Anyone ever seen this before? There are copper colored speckles throughout, when You look close at the wear there is the stainless, copper"wash"and then black..here's pics....

As I understand it there were a ton of experiments with getting a finish to stick to gas cylinders. Maybe this one they put a copeer jacket on to try to get the finish to stick.... just my silly guess.

Not Silly Dan,this was the"guess"I got on CMP forum. The Guy said that Stained Glass makers use copper coating and there are chemicals that will Blacken it...who knows, but it does look original.

I would imagine copper coating and could du-lite even stick to stainless? du-lite is a bluing, is it not? Only recently, in the last few years, have I even seen a blu that stuck to stainless.

By the way, I've seen that copper look before but never cared enough to pay attention to what it was on.

The gas cylinder hay have been refinished at some time. With Brounell's stainless steel blueing salts, if you put too much chemical in the mix, the parts will come out with that copper color. It does the same thing with parkerizing. It has happened to me with both applications.

This Gas cylinder and a lot of My others came off of de-milled Rifles.I think They came from Italy, and someone had no love for Them. Some were covered in rust from the rifle I suppose,Dirt, grime, mystery stuff, and such.Who knows what They may have done, but this is the first I have ever seen that looked like this.
