Gents,

Any opinions on gun safes? I only have 6 long guns, but some other things I'd like to keep out of my little ones hands, like ammo and my pistols. I've been looking at a few on amazon. The nice thing about ordering from there is the shipping is free and they wheel it into the house for you.

This one is a 14 gun version that interests me:

I have room in the walk in closet (which also has a locking knob) for one, I'm just trying to decide what brand to go with and was curious if you guys had any experience.

I was just talking to Tim about safes today. I have a crappy one. They claim it holds 20 guns. All I can fit is 9. The safe makers are a little optimistic about the capacity. Whatever you think you need get one 1.5-2x the size.

I have a Liberty 21 gun safe, I took out all the dividers and put rifles in gun socks. I stack them alternating muzzle down, buttstock down. This way you can really pack it, I put hangtags on the socks so I can tell whats in them
Moral of the story is get a safe 3 times bigger than you think you will ever need

Are there manufacturers to stay away from?

I don't necessarily want to spend a ton of money, but I don't want something that won't do what it's supposed to either.

I don't anticipate having many more long guns, maybe 10 at the most. I have too many hobbies to collect a bunch and they're no good just sitting in the safe not getting shot.

Ya, I said the same thing once

Also, think about how you will get it into your house and who will deliver/install it. Remember, that $7/hour meathead with the dolly will now know you have guns and other things of value, where the safe is, and the layout of your home.

This is the safe I have http://www.libertysafesusa.com/safe_centurion-dlx.php I think its was around $550.00 on sale
It will stop a crackhead but thats about it, I need to upgrade
It only has locking lugs on one side of the door, I would rather see them they way around or atleast on two sides

I'm not concerned about someone from the freight company knowing that I have guns in the house. There are lots of ways to safeguard your house, but if a professional thief wants what you have, there's not a lot you can do about it.

Want to see the layout of someone's house? I live in a cookie cutter development. There are 10 other houses out of 40 that are built just like mine. It's not hard to find that kind of stuff out.

Alarms, locks and guard dogs are installed to keep honest people honest. Dishonest people will come take your things regardless of how hard you want them to be protected.

I thought about some of the more expensive safes, like you were talking about with the multiple locks, but they're just not in my price range.

I need something that gives me a reasonable assurance of keeping amateurs out and making sure that my 2 boys don't wander in my locked closet and play with things they're not supposed to.

I'm not comfortable with the cabinet style, that's basically a locker with a key and I can break into one of those in about 60 seconds if I take my time. But I can't afford to build a vault either.

Get one atleast 2 times bigger than you think you will need.
Trust me on this.
I inherited some guns from my wifes family that no one wanted. Sometimes when someone finds out that you like something like guns,3 or 4 fall in your lap and you have to have a safe place to put them.
Kids will root around in your closet. I recall when I was about 15 I found my Dad's penthouse magazine a old VHS Porno movie and a Stainless 41.mag Smith & Wesson I found in his closet, that I took out and rolled the loaded cylinders on. I knew better but did it anyway.I found other uses for the movie and magazine.

LOL
By the way I have a Cannon, with the cheap crinkle finish. I paid about $600 about 10 years ago.

I have 3 of these Zanotti gun safes, they break down for moving and are built like a tank.

+1 on the Zanotti, I bought the biggest one, and was ables to handle it with just two people.
They are made very well. You can pick it up at the teminal and save a few bucks on shipping as well.

Those Zanotti's look nice. Do you have to contact them to order one?

They look pricey.

Yes, I called and talked to them.
They do take a while to build, mine took about ten months.

I also have a Zannotti. I had it shipped to my office. I brought it home, piece by piece, and put it together one afternoon. It's quite nice and worth the four month wait.

A friend of mine got me a deal on two of my Zanotti's. He knew of a guy closing a business and wanted to sell his safes.
I bought them sight unseen for a thousand bucks......one of them is the biggest one Zannoti makes and the other is somewhat smaller.

If they're $2000 safes, I'm sure they're nice, but that's not going to happen.

I'll take my chances on a $500 one. Maybe someday when I build the retirement house, I can put a really nice room/safe together for my collectibles.

Get as much as you can afford because you will soon find out that you need a bigger one. Ask me how I know this.
