Guys,
Look at this "pits" and tell me what you think. Don't these look like air pockets from welding? The one area that caught my eye first is on the left side of the receiver.

I don't know about you, but I think those yellow arrows are kind of strange. I never saw yellow arrows on a receiver before.

You don't like my arrows? Gee I thought you of all people would appreciate them! Got the idea from those "Sign Here" post-it arrows you lawyers love to use. :)

I think yellow arrows should be standard on all Garands and carbines to point out any flaws. :) Is that something you own, Guy, or something you are looking to buy?
I guess those could either be from welds or rust pitting. Only way to know for sure is to remove the finish. :(

No, not a rifle I own or one I'm looking to buy, just one I happen to see and noticed those pits. I would have passed them all off as rust pits and thought nothing of it if not for the one area to the far left that looks more like a crack or separation then a pit. Now that "to me" looks like weld.
Back in the day when we used to try and save cracked engine blocks, sometimes the weld wouldn't take to the cast, sometimes due to carbon, oil and crud build up in the crack and you would see a void spot that looked just like that.
Now before anyone tells me, yes I know the receiver isn't cast. I was just commenting a comparison of welds that didn't take, what they looked like and why it caught my eye.
I wish I could see pics of the face of the receiver out of the stock and with the rear guard removed. Not that it matters, just my curiosity.

Weld takes park unless it's stainless.

I was wondering about the park/finish as usually a weld will show different color. The receiver may be welded but I doubt it is a drill rifle as the welds were more or less hidden and those pits appear to be on the top portion of the receiver. I honestly never had much to do with drill rifles only the ceremonial rifles that were plated but not deactivated. This is one on me
