OK,
I have a chance to buy this at what I consider to be a good price.

I've restored one drill rifle already, but it only had two small tack welds on the bottom of the barrel that were never visible when the receiver was in the stock. BUT, I'm not sure I can remove this weld without having the finished result look like shit.
I've never seen one welded at the top like this. It's sad. Other than the nasty weld and the cylinder lock screw being tack welded to the cylinder lock, it is in great shape. I'd love to bring this one back into the shooting world, but it looks to be a real chore.
Anyone worked with a ceremonial like this before??

Kurt,
Other than that crappy weld it is a nice Receiver. You could knock most down and have it refinished, but I do also think it will show,Personally,If I were building a blank firing Rifle I would tackle it because I think the rest of the Receiver looks so nice.I am sure there are things You could do that would lessen or eliminate the effect if it is non stainless weld.I have seen a few welded ther and wonder why They would purposely create an eyesore like that :(

I've already got three blank-fire only Garands and sure don't need another one! This one is a 5.8M and clean as hell other than the welding.
If I could clean off that eyesore and the barrel isn't jacked up I'd be wanting to shoot this beast. Getting a late model BR for less than the price of a stripped receiver is just too tempting.

Is there anything special about the receiver? Is it an IHC or a rare SN? If not it's worth next to nothing (my opinion). There are still plenty more out there to be had that do not require so much work.

Nah, nothing special.
It would have been a winter project, and not much else. The challenge of bringing an old warhorse back from the dead sounded fun, but I don't need any more blank fire guns and I've got no use for a wall hanger.

It IS a nice looking receiver but MAN looks like they let a 3 year old do the weld!

I can weld better than that!

If it was cheap enough I'd use it for caps but since you have 3 already........

Why do they weld the barrel to the receiver on drill rifles?

If the price was low, $50 or close, I'd buy it and convert it to a mag fed. I really think these things are perfect for the mag fed option.
