View Full Version : Finally got to shoot my mini-g

First 200 rounds went great. Couldn't believe how easy it was to shoot. Tried out different firing positions. One observation is that the ultimak gets real hot pretty fast. Definitely a glove rifle. After about 200 rounds she started short stroking and not picking up the next round. I found that the gas plug was loose also allowed the muzzle break to move around. Since it was short stroking it allowed the charging handle to come out of the grove in the receiver which was a pain for me since I had to figure out how to get the bolt open to get back to the grove. Any advice on how to work this adjustable gas plug? From what I understand it needs to be tightened down and the Allen in the middle used to adjust. Do I turn it in or out to allow more gas? What's a good starting point?

At 50 yards I was putting 3 rounds at about an inch off of a sand bag with a 4 Moa fastfire 2. I think I could have done a little better if I had a sling. I forgot the wrench I neede to mount my scout scope.

It looks good in the synthetic stock!

How hot did the Ultimak get and how many rounds did it take before it was uncomfortable to touch? Thinking about whether I want to put one on my Mini-G when it gets here or adapt a Springfield Scout mount I have on hand instead (my rifle will have the Beretta gas system so there should be room).

I am not sure but I know that it was burn your hand hot at 80 rounds or so. I am going to try and get to the range tomorrow. I planned on checking after every few rounds. Looking at the design though I am not surprised it got so hot. I am considering a Magpul AFG.

Went with the AFG. Because the angle of the ram line stock it's slightly angled more than it was intended to be. Adapted a rail to mount it on. Also because of the angle of the stock and rail it's really only good for the AFG or maybe a side sling mount. I have a angled mount under the scope that I may use for the red dot. Mounted in top it is more of a chin weld. If I leave the red dot on top I'm going to use the angled mount for a sure fire. It's already getting a little too tactical and heavy.

Your gas lock screw came loose because I didn't tighten the dickens out of it. The Allen head should not have changed adjustment so it should be fine. You'll need a Big @ss Screwdriver to tighten the screw down good and tight. Schuster does not make the screw able to take a 1/4" drive or the cross wrench made by some for the Garand.

Every single scout rail will get hot when run on the Garand. They will get hotter when run on the G. If you are putting through 200 rounds of ammo in short order, that rail will get very very hot.

Finally, who has more Tats, Prince or highanglehell?

Just couldn't handle the red dot so high so I put it at an angle. Not perfect but better than the other way. I just worry about the fast fire hanging out like that. Cranked down the gas plug and opened it up. Turned it in until she was golden. 200 rounds without a hitch after it was adjusted. Also modified a bayonet to fit with a grinder. I really want this set up to work but I may end up with a aimpoint H-1.

large, non-sparking standard screwdrivers (straight or offset) seem to work well for torquing the plug,
the copper alloy is softer than the gun parts - makes guns happy

I marked the allen and the plug w/ a dot of paint so I don't get wrapped around the axles when testing different loads. so far, the allen hasn't moved on it's own. someday, I may dremel/notch the parts instead for a more permanent reference. just need to get the parts parked.....

currently, my brass ejects about 4-5 o'clock w/ most loads with the allen set at 270* with respect to 360 on the plug. once in a great while, I may get a FTF. a 90* CW turn so the marks line up at 360 will eject the brass at 0100. when it matters, I will run it at 360. 145-168gr works fine here.

how's the Burris working?

HighAngleHell
12-29-2011, 03:16 AM
The Burris Scout scope is great but I have a lot more experience with red dots. I have the scope mounted so low that the sights kind of get in the way. not bad but enough that I am considering removing them(not thrilled about not having back up irons). Most of effort has been trying to find a solution for my Back up red dot. I think angled is about as good as it will get.

Tim is absolutely right about scout scope mounts getting hot. Since the mount is directly attached to the barrel and is made from a good conductor like aluminum it becomes a large heavy heat sink. I can't imagine a grumpy old retired cop, go figure! Hey Tim another Gman!

Hump, I'd like to get my ahum done with "Shorty's Truck Stop Chattanooga Tennessee." Of course I'd also like to be 6 foot 6inch and weigh 185 neither of which is going to happen.

Just looked at the video, I wouldn't call that a painfully slow reload - it looked pretty smooth. Good recoil control too.

HighAngleHell

Need to cut that reload time in half. Also need to get out of the M4 mindset of shooting every thing 3 times. I'm going to practice single and double taps a lot more. I take no credit for the recoil control. Between the smith mb and the rubber recoil pad you can't fail. Man this thing is sweet.

Anyone got a fresh link for the video? I thought I was the only person who had an afg for their mini g. Haven't mounted it yet though. Otherwise, same setup, ie. ramline, scout rail etc. Got a 308 battlecomp on mine though.

I like the old-school look of Parkerizing and walnut, but there's no denying that the combo of Mini-G, synthetic stock and railed handguard presents a certain... attitude. Gotta like it!

Hi High
That ain't a nigerian, it's a custom from LAW483. more like an M14e2.

Yes, straightening the belly of the Buttstock after the LOP is set it not a problem. The main reason for the shape is so the LOP can be shortened without shrinking the footprint.

This one is different from the first; the grip is the same length as an AR grip in relation to the top of the trigger.

Grumpyoldredneckcop,
just curious, do you intend to bore out the SAI scout mount to use on your G? I took a look at that option and decided it wouldn't work on mine (I have the M1 gas cylinder/op rod so that would be an issue. I ended up going with the Ultimak. Just a guess, but I'm thinking that the Scout mount might possibly get even hotter than the Ultimak, considering that the Scout is so small and would probably be a smaller heat sink than the larger Ultimak. Not sure if the Ultimak has a lot more surface contact with the barrel. I saw a thread on the M14 forum, and a member was saying that his mini reddot fried on the mount, and others were saying that they didn't have any trouble with heat hurting their red dots. I guess it probably depends on how much rapid fire you do with your G. I shot my G in a run and gun match and at the end of the stage ( no more than 5 clips) my Ultimak was hot to the touch, not barrel hot but noticably hot to the touch.

These guys make some quality stuff.

Go to their web page. I was impressed. Tim has a couple of mag fed with their mounts on them. I like them

If I has a Mini G next to my bed instead of a 12 ga it would wear a red dot for sure.
