This is a thread I started on a local forum I moderate.
I hope this is OK to post here.

I'm tried my hand at making some home made grips for my 1911 Springer.
I went and picked up some canvas and other necessary items to get the ball rolling.

I have the first set gluing at the moment and let me tell you, This is a much better summer DIY, I mixed and glued the canvas in the house and its smell is overwhelming...

I got the idea from this thread on the 1911 forum.

Hopefully I can get started on forming them tomorrow, I went with a black and tan for my first try.

Just waiting...

Cheating...

Coming along.

Finally got around to sanding them...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l243/Vitesse_6/IMG_4786.jpg

I am going to take them to work and see what I can come up with, Ether I will file some grooves into it or I will have my wife cut something into them.

Shaping around the plunger spring housing took a little work, But I finally got it to fit good.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l243/Vitesse_6/IMG_4791.jpg

I may still save the bottom a little more flat, But it has a good fit so far.

I drilled the outside holes slightly too big :o I need to measure and go find the proper size drill bit.
But I like them so far
I will be taking them to work again to see if I can hand check the grips or maybe see if my wife can cut something in them on her engraver, Then I need to clear coat them.

Unsure as of yet, I still have some cutting work to do on them, Then they get a coat of Polyurethane.

Pretty wild. I have and still make them from all kinds of wood but never thought of that. My work is all hand and wished I had the cutter like that. Rick B

I had intentions of cutting it all by hand, But my wife said she had some time to cut them out, So who is going to argue with their wife, Right?!?

Thanks, But I don't think it would be a money making venture, Considering what some grips cost, If I made more I would probably just give them away in online freebee's.

However, I managed to find some red and blue fabrics that my work out, I will be gluing them up as soon as I finish this post

As you can see this one is red and tan.

The polyurethane is still drying on this one, Thats what the white stuff is.
I will be keeping this set, When I was drilling the hole for the screw, The bit grabbed the grip and drilled all the way through it, So there isn't any ledge for the screw to hold it tight, c'est la vie...
