Tim,
Have you given any more consideration to this request from some of us here at BT? I have an HRA that is just screaming for a new park job and I would rather not have it turn out black. Pretty please?

It wouldn't be "black" but it would almost be. HRA's turn out the darkest, usually.

It's strange that there are so many rifles refinished after Korea that aren't manganese.

At the Marine Corps RTE here in Quantico all the parts like M14's come out black. Have for at least 40 years.

M240G barrels come out medium grey, has to be the heat treat and material used in machine gun barrels.

It must have been commercial or Springfield Armory that did zinc or some mix?

So would zinc be the way to go as the finish would be medium, or would it be very light regardless?

Heres a SA that Tim did for me years ago in Zinc, this pic taken when it was first done

Fast forward a few years, color is "slightly" darker

I'm guessing close to Orlando's color.

I know that the correct color for HRA is black - were any of them (re)done in a lighter shade?

No idea but maybe at rebuild, if there was one.

I have seen lots of M14 HRA parts that are zinc, but they are probably refinished and not from the factory new.

Do you think this is from protective oil over time?

What do you put on it?

I rubbed it down with grease when I got it and then just wiped lightly with oil after each use.
You would have to ask Tim, He would know more than me

That is a fine looking Garand, Orlando!

Thanks, its one of my favorites and best shooter, I handpicked it from the North Store. It was a woodless Dane Rack Grade with VAR barrel MW -1 ,TW-3 for $295.00. Rifle had no finish left on it which was normal for the Danes, not sure what they did to them. Had Tim repark it and do a trigger job, I added a nice stock I got from M Baker

I sure miss the days of the woodless danes

I wish that I lived closer to the NS. I live in CT and it is a long way from there; not exactly a "hop in the car and pop over" kind of ride. Maybe someday I will go there.
