Great pics. Thanks for sharing them with us. I had a rifle range in Lorton VA and used to go to the Manassa battle field and pick up bullets on the side of the road as the farmers tossed them out of their fields. Can't do that anymore. I think the farmers realized what they were doing and stopped tossing them. Bullets were not the only thing you could find there. Buttons were also pretty common but not in great shape.

The photobucket slides just don't want to work here, others do. The link for the slide shows do work though.

Not the greatest pics, many did not even turn out, needed a better camera and was short on time.

You know what, those cannons look small. They probably are small right up to the point where one is aimed at you.

I hope they chain these down. I want one!

not chained, but really really heavy. The carriages are made outta steel.
The barrel in my pic weighs over 1,200 pounds. Carriage probably another 1,200.

Yeah, even if it's a 5.56, it still probably looks huge when your staring it in the face.

Ben,
Nice shot of the muzzle of a 12 pound model 1857 Napoleon. If you think that is heavy try moving a 24 pound field howitzer with carriage its just under 4000 pounds. Ill move rifled guns all day long they are light so are the Napoleon's compared to the 24 pounder.

I love going to Gettysburg. I reside about an hour from the battlefield and have my camper not too far from the National Park. In all the years going to the battlefielf I have never seen every monument or did not learn something new.
Very nice pics!

Thanks for clearing that up, I thought that was mountain Howitzer. But then again I believe the barrels are shorter on those.

I have resided in the area for years and have made numerous trips to Gettysburg. I have never even come close to seeing the entire battlefield or learning new things. This round while on the tour bus the guide pointed out a cannon ball that had lodged in the stone of a house just off the main square.
One thing though, the new visitors center is nice but much was lost in the new displays. People were complaining about how hard the displays and museum area were to navigate through.
If you go to the area there is a military museum on the same road to the new vistors center that is cool to go through.

If you want to truly get the most out a trip there to the battlefield. Get out of the car and walk the fields anything that is not private property you can walk lots of great monuments you cant see from the roads hidden away and you can see how the terrain played into why things happened during those 3 days.
