Actually, you're the first to say that. I just got it finished and haven't had it to the range yet. The funky colors are due to the sun not cooperating with my camera and mineself.

Ah Jon, seeing that rifle reminds me of the heady days of Sputnik, and Yuri Gagarin-when the world would tremble at the sound of our rockets.

Lialos,
First I stripped the stock to the bare wood using MEK and 4-0 steel wool. Then I used ZINSSER Bulls Eye Amber colored shellac. I did not stain the wood. The color is in the shellac. Put on 2 coats. That's it. Quite simple but I think the results are fantastic.

Presumably, when you stripped it, you also pulled out some of the preservatives on the interior of the stock, which you then did not cover with shellac, so what did you do for the inside of the stock, where the wood meets the metal?

[ so what did you do for the inside of the stock, where the wood meets the metal? ]
It too got stripped with the MEK and steel wool. There was nothing bleeding out of the wood by the time I got through with it. I was lucky in that the stock was dry.
