Firing 35 Whelen out of the Mini-G.
The ammo I used was 250 grain rated at 2600 FPS in a 24 inch barrel.
I fired 10 rounds and received an average FPS of 2428 FPS.

Ammo rated at 2600 FPS in 24" barrel
Fired from Mini-G 2428 FPS in 16" barrel
I lost 172 FPS or about 7%
The ammo would deliver 3754 FLBS in 24" BRL
It delivered 3346 Foot LB's in the 16" BRL

At 140 yards the groups were just under 2" off a rest.

Here's some .308 data
150gr bullet has approx velocity of 2800 fps. 2,611 foot pounds of energy 24" barrel
Out o f the Mini-G
barrelAverage FPS 2666
Foot pounds of energy 2368

30/06 Mini-G

All groups were fired from a seated rest with targets set up at 50-yards with five shots to a group. Velocities were measured with a PACT chronograph and expressed in Feet per Second. Energies are listed in Foot Pounds of Energy.

These are NOT my numbers. These numbers were given to me by a third party using a Mini-G with a TE of 4 and ME of 1.

Tim, I'm not a ballilistics expert, so......
Would adjusting the Schuster plug a notch or two change the velocity from what you show above?

Tim, I'm not a gun/ammo whiz like some of you guys/patriots but I do know this, as old as I am and as bad as I shake and with a little ra in my hands you don't want me shooting at you with either of my miniG's! The barrel length seems almost negligible. I think my .308 is a little more accurate than the 30.06 based on seat of pants and the SWAG rule. I've never tried to adjust either of my gas plugs but I've never had the reason to mess with them as both rifles have always cycled correctly.

I don't think the schuster adjustment would change fps in any measurable way BUT, now I have to find out.

I have done a lot of hunting with a 308 using 18 to 20" barrels, the 375 H&H using 19 3/4" and 20" barrels, and some hunting with a 350 Rem Mag, with a 20" barrel.

I have found the reduction in velocity with these shorter barrels has had no effect on killing power at normal hunting ranges.

I have killed Javelina with a 19 3/4" 308 with no problems at 412 [lazered] yards.

A 35 Whelen Mini-G would be a heck of a bear/moose/elk/pig, as well as for deer of course.

I wonder whether handloads using a faster burning powder would increase velocity from the Mini G? (Faster burning powder to hopefully result in more complete powder burn from the shortened barrel).

Have any of y'all tried this?
