Hey there fellas, Im thinking about doing the conversion to my 54 and was curious about the balistics between the 30.06 and the .308. I will be using this gun to hunt elk, deer and antelope to atleast 400 yds. Is the conversion worth it? I also emailed tim and i know he is a busy guy!! so I thought i would also ask you guys!

Try Greg at Standard Parts or Mike Baker. I'm sure 1 of them will come through.

I'm no expert on ballistics, but I'm pretty sure 30.06 and .308 are nearly identical. IIRC, the .308 has a little less energy at longer range.

Now, I AM a hunter. My PERSONAL opinion is that I've never been much of a fan of 30.06 as a hunting round. I consider the 30.06 to be good for just about anything and great at just about nothing. I have game specific rifles for everything I hunt: duck/goose/turkey - 12g. grouse/woodcock - 20g (should go to 28 really). coyote/varmints/prairie dogs - .22, .204. whitetail - .280. mule deer - .280, 7mm, or 300WSM. prongers - .280

I like my .280 best for long range. I take shots out over 400yds and make minimal adjustments for drop. You can't do that with an .06. I think with a 100yd zero, I've got maybe 7-8" drop on the .280. I'm guessing the .06 is closer to twice that (someone with more knowledge please correct me).

All that said, I have a buddy that, despite having more firearms than most gun stores, takes his trust BAR in 30.06 out pretty much everywhere we go. He trusts it more than anything he has and is able to, instinctively, make any all adjustments necessary on the fly.

I guess it's what you like and what makes you comfortable. Now, if you are only going to have ONE rifle that you need to fit all your needs, 30.06 or 7mm are probably going to be your best choice. I'm actually thinking about adding a 7mm-08 to my collection. Not sure what I'll do with it yet, though. LOL

Now, as far as "is the conversion worth it?" - what is it that you are trying to achieve? Are you just trying to build a hunting rifle?

If you find out, let me know. I can't find the 5" anywhere. Greg at Standard Parts is looking into having them made, but I think that will be several months out before they are available.

I found that the enbloc is really a pain to reload when firing and running game, I think it would be eaiser and faster to reload with magazine. I think a mag fed garand would be an ideal hunting rifle.

Most states have 5 round mag limits so, in my opinion, either rifle really is fine for hunting. Difference between .308 and 30/06 for hunting within 800 yards? Nothing, a rounding error.

I have a lead on 2 BM59-62 Tri-compensators! I was curious if it will work on a Garand gas system.

Has to be the drop down gas cylinder as in a BM59, 62 or 69.

The Tri comps and all BM59 muzzle attachments can be modified to function on the standard garand gas system.
Reese modified them to work. I have a para comp that I can use on an M1 or a BM59Just by swapping the lock.

A T37 works with a standard gas cylinder set up, this said, if it is a reproduction, it is most probably junk. You can't shoot those T37 reproductions more than 10 times and the forks will start flaring out. Soon, they banana peel inside out.
