Folks I know it's not the right time to bring this up, it never is, but Duluth is flooded and needs your help! Besides the check you are all about to write, couldn't you... give a little more? I, on the other hand, will not only refuse to give BUT I want my money BACK!

The crap never ever ends. The country is full of people who refuse to take care of themselves.

Yup, my family has been living on the banks of the Mighty Mississip since 1843. Lost everything in the flood of 1844, 48, 52, 53, 60, 65, 66, 70, 72, 77, 84, 88, 90, 95, 96, 97, 99, 1903, 1905, 1910, 1915, 191, 1916 again, 1919, 1922, 1924, 1930, 1935. Then FDR and the WPA built up the levees and we didn't lose everything again till 1941, 1944, 1953, 1958, 1962, 1966, 1973, 1978, 1984, 1986, 1995, 1998, 2003, 2006, and 2010. This is our land and as we'll never leave it!

I know that living where I do(The Gulf coast) comes with certain risks like hurricanes. We prepare or fail to accordingly.
Thoseof us that do ,fair pretty well and we keep on. Those that do not are hot, loose their food in thier freezer and are they typical person looking for a hand out.
Sometimes these hard times forge good friendships when it brings out the best in people.
I had a family that rented a house across the street from us ,the house was all electric. The family never so much as even waved or said hello, goodmorning etc. and during Hurricane Ike we lost power for 15 days. We fired up the 5K generator made some coffee, fired up our gas stove and baked some cinnamon rolls. I sent my wife over with a pot of coffee and some cinnamon rolls and from then on the Dad always made sure he spoke to me and waved. I guess it was a humbling experience for him as a man and a head football coach . He has no power,no gas ,no propane , nothing. I can only imagine how he must have felt,he had 2 teenage daughters at the time.
I put myself in his shoes and thought about how helpless it would be for a man to not be able to provide for any of his families needs and helped him as much as I could. They came and had dinner with us later on in the evening.Oh they had a hole in thier roof also.
It is amazing how something so simple as a cup of coffee or a hot meal can lift someone's spirits when all is lost.
Phil and Cheryl have since moved, but we keep in touch.
