Starting another Garand build yesterday. Installed a like new VAR barrel that I bought off a BT Member awhile back on a receiver I had laying around
Then started working/fitting a Dupage/Boyds stock. Took half a day but mods are done and now in process of multiple coats of BLO
Color is really more brown than I care for

Decided to try the NM mod to the gas cylinder.
Used a NOS Cylinder, a Dremel tool with sanding drum and reemed the rear ring

Then beveled the lug so it would not hit front handguard

Hoping to make this one a good shooter
Pics to follow when project is finished

The wood looks good to me! I built one years ago with some of the NM mods, did my gas cylinder the same way as yours. Not sure if it made a difference or not.

Ya, I dont know if it will make any difference or not but thought I would give it a try
I also did some mods to the handguards, making sure they dont touch the barrel anywhere. Maybe all the mods together will help
Also going to do a trigger job.

I recall some of the things I did aside from the gas cylinder mods:
Screwed the front handguard to the lower band
Removed the handguard liner
Opened the hole on the front handguard ferrule slightly making sure nothing touched the barrel other than the lower band
shortened the rear handguard and hogged out the inside a bit, again so no rubbing/stress when inserted into the lower band
Polished the bottom of the barrel chamber end and the oprod mating surface
Polished the oprod tab and bolt/oprod raceways
Lapped the bolt
Polished the bolt lugs, the bottom, the backside cam area etc.
Polished the top of the hammer
Polished inside the receiver heel area where the bolt rubs
NM front sight and hooded rear but standard rear sight with modified base for the hooded aperture.
Handfitted stock, relieved oprod channel etc. It was a very tight fit but did not bed it.
Trigger job.
It was an awesome rifle, barrel was an LMR. That thing was so smooth that when you did a tilt test you barely had to tip it either way. Like everything was sliding on snot or rollers. Put new springs in it and it gave me years of enjoyment. Wish I still had it but I eventully ended up selling it.

How much did you remove from the rear ring, it looks like alot from the pic's. I have also seen other shooters add 2 allen head set screws under the front site, it makes the gas cylinber rock solid.

Just eye balled it, looks like about the thickness of a piece of paper

This gas cylinder fit tighter than any I have ever used. I had to really hammer it on and was afraid I wasnt going to be able to get it all the way back
