In the early 1030's, Irwin Pederson submitted a prototype semi-automatic entry into the US Ordnance Departments competition for a new service rifle. It was initially chosen over John garand's entry, and was approved by the Ordnance Dep't in .276 caliber, & sent to the Chief of Staff, General Douglas MacArthur for approval. He disapproved it, for , among other reasons that it needed a dry lubricated cartridge, and was a little light for rough service use, because it took a different caliber, and Gen. Mac said that that the US had millions of 30-06 rounds left over from the Great War. ( It was not known as WWII, because WWII had not yet occurred.)About 50 of this particular model was made by Vickers in England to sell to the Americans, so it is not a real prototype.
Pix is available at www.stevecobbguns.com, click on "Guns for sale", "Rifles", & then "American".

It is well worth seeing. I am going over to him shortly. He is in the next town over from the old Sarco location.
