Went to the North Store last week, everything was very picked over, nothing really spoke to me. No Service Grades and the Field Grades were all pretty rough, most needing a rebarrel.
Was going to buy two barreled receivers and was getting ready to check out and saw the rack of WRA Rack Grades. Funny thing is they gauged much better than the SA, HRA Field Grade rifles and overall condition was better.
Picked out a nice WRA , looks to be original finish receiver with replacement 1952 SA barrel MW 1.5 TW 3.
A real mixmaster, beveled gas lock, solid pin in lower band , 19 SA Bolt, HRA Op Rod ,pristene all correct 65 series trigger group, nice HRA Stock and buttplate. Front handguard has biscut repairs and saw cut gas cylinder will need refinished. Gas cylinders gauges good as does Op Rod. Not really sure why it wasnt graded a Service Grade or atleast a Field . I put back the two barreled receivers and picked out a stripped receiver for future project
Heres pics of her after I changed the gas cylinder and wiped down the wood with BLO

I'm jealous. Nice score on that one. You guys that live close enough to the stores are quite lucky to have that option.

Ya, I wouldnt ever take the chance on a mail order Rack Grade or even a Field Grade, being able to handpick you can find a few nice rifles in the lesser grades

Nice score Orlando! Sometimes it's all about timing. I live over 850 miles from south store and over 530 miles from Noerth store. I'M SO FREAKIN JEALOUS!! Although I do live only 4 miles from Orion 7 so I guess thats a consolation.

Since the WRAs are such mixmasters, I think I'm sworn off the higher grades...too much money, and a step backwards for a restoration, generally. Greek park and CMP wood aren't worth the extra $200; I'd rather have a strong heel stamp and original finish if I'm going to replace everything anyway.

I picked up a nice RG last fall that had a few original parts and finish, and I picked up another nice one on Friday with original finish, a nice postwar SA stock and handguard (and an ugly, oversized birch front hg...might have been what made it a RG), a WW2 SA barrel that gauged very well, HRA trigger group, and a -2SA bolt that I needed for another build. Not as pretty as Orlando's, but I'm sure it'll clean up nicely, the wood figure looks very nice before cleanup.
