If you decide to do a deep cleaning and refinish of the wood here is how I do it. Takes maybe 10 -15 minutes for a completetly clean bare stock . Its a really simple ,easy and alot less harsh than other methods
I first take Purple Power degreaser full strength and put it in a spray bottle.

I then spray down the stock with full strength degreaser, immediataly you will see years of grease. oil and dirt start to roll off

I then take a soft nylon bristle brush and go over the stock.
Rinse very well with hot water while rubbing with brush .
I will usually do procedure one more time except the last time wipe dry with cotton towel.
If stock is very oil soaked it may take another cleaning .
I then let the stock set to dry out of direct heat source.
If it drys slowly you have a less chance of wood warping.

This is what the wood looks like after drying

I let the stock dry for a day or two before refinishing

I can't seem to find any "Purple Power"in My area.

Walmart has their generic brand of purple power, but I can't remember the name of it.
Some of the auto parts stores carry Purple Power.

Gloves are a must! I think Purple Power was originally used as a defoliant in Viet Nam.

It is good stuff, I bought some at Advance Auto to try around the garage, it's a damn good parts de-greaser.

Your right, gloves are a must, I thought the skin was going to melt off my hands.

Cleans white walls nice, but it left streaks in the wife's alloy wheels. Oops!

That's what I get for being a nice guy and washing her car.

She's always yacking at me about the small stuff. I'm on her permanent shiz list, right at the top, have been for years.....

I haven't tried purple power. I did once try the ZEP degreaser from Hopeless Depot and Blowes. The grease ran out of the wood just liek in your pic, but the wood had a lot or green in it from the degreaser when I was done.

Purple Power does not affect the color of the wood, atleast not on the several dozens I have used it on
