Rem 700 vs. Win 70 or others

Which do you think is better - thinking about another bolt action.

I deer hunt with a 700 BDL in 30.06 and have no complaints. It's not new but it works

Pre-64 model 70 controlled feed. After '64 the Remington.

I have a 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag topped with a Leupold VX-III 4.5 x 14 x 50. It's a tack driver as far as I'm concerned. I have no experience with the Model 70 so I can't compare. I am a big fan of my 700 though.

I checked out a couple of 700s this past weekend. I did not love them for various reasons, but the one recurring thing that bugged me was the sloppiness of the bolt to receiver fit. When I worked the action, the bolt just kind of rattled around like it was a little bit undersized for the receiver. I did try out a Savage and honestly, it fit my frame and bolt cycled much better than the 700. Going to look at a few competing models this weekend.

IIRC Savage has the accu-trigger. A dangerous game rifle-smith I know loves the value in the Savage line.

I too am a fan of the accu-trigger as it imitates the feel of a double stage.

I've got a "pre-64" M70 (the ones made in the late '90s, not a vintage one) that I love. It has the B.O.S.S. muzzle brake/tuner thing, and it's stupidly accurate with the right loads. I've shot M700s quite a bit, too.

I don't think either is really "better;" they seem to be comparable in quality overall. I'd buy either, all else equal, and would probably decide ultimately on which one had a better deal. I don't have as much experience with the Savage guns, but they seem like an awful good deal for the money, too.

I just held the 20" barreled Tactical Model 700 in .308. I liked it, but boy do modern rifles feel tinny next to some iron and wood.

I have a savage 14 in 308. nice. I like it better than the remington and winchesters I looked at.

WOW, next to "religion and politics" or government employment I can't think of another subject that could receive so MANY different points of veiw!
I love Remington 700's, I've owned Winchester Model 70's too, but just didn't like them as well as the Remington. Why? I have no good answer, I guess it's the same as my favorite icecream being vanilla while all the guys I work with like "rocky road!" I just do. I own 9 Model 700's chambered in 300 RUM, 270 WSM , 308 WIN, 270 WIN and 243 WIN and recently sold my 700 in 7mm RUM. I've never experienced any problems with them and I like the fact that when I choose to shoot a different caliber while hunting the overall feel and handling of the rifle is the same. Now having said this I don't think you'll be dissappointed in either.
Savage rifles right now are all the "rage" in my area. Price point being a great influence, but according to friends that own them and what I've read they're suppose to be wonderfully accurate! I don't like Savage, I can't help myself but to me they are just plain "fugly!" The rear of bolt looks too "Third World Country" to me and I just simply won't own one. Plus I'm not a fan of the accutrigger because I never liked my Glock trigger. I'm probably cutting my nose off to spite my face because of all the good things I've heard about them!
So after all my rambling I've not helped a bit! In this case I think you'll do fine with whatever model you choose! Good Luck with it and have fun! Thomas

I just bought a Rem 700 tactical, 20" heavy barrel in .308. Haven't had a chance to work up any loads for it yet, but will provide a range report as soon as I can.

I'm glad that I asked this question; I really appreciate all of your responses. I also handled a Browning X-Bolt but hated the bolt handle itself; felt like me (lefty) trying to cut cardboard with right-handed scissors. It had a funky twist to it that did not feel natural in my hand.

I own a Browning A-Bolt Target in 308 Win. Why did I buy a Browning? Well first off Remington didn't offer a 24" Hvy Barrel 308 with a 1-10" twist. Ruger does and I like Ruger bolt guns (after a good trigger job) but I couldn't find a Ruger when I was in the market. Savage offered one but.......(see above post) so I bought a Browning. My buddy has a couple A-Bolts and they are shooters, plus Brownings come glass bedded and pre floated (which is something I do to my rifles anyway) so I settled for the A-Bolt.

This rifle is nice, it produced a nice group from the bench at 100 yds

I wish the forend was a little longer, the barrel is 28" and I think a little more forend would improve the balance and overall appearance of the rifle. Yet it is a fine firearm! Really my only issue with it is it's not a Remington. :o

Sexy stuff. I'm not even a good enough shooter to appreciate the difference in that vs the "regular" 700, but it's a beautiful package.

Most of the time, I much prefer the Remington 700. Having said that, sitting next to me is a pre-'64 Model 70 action, which is going to get a 30" #6-contour Lilja barrel (1.250" over the chamber, .750" muzzle) in .358 Norma Mag, sitting in most likely a McMillan stock.

I had a pre-64 in .243. The controlled feed is like a Swiss watch next to the push feed of the post and the 700's. I'm sure they both work equally as well but I can't help but to appreciate the pre-64 craftsmanship.

I have a Rem 700 in 7mm mag , and to me the bolt feels gritty and unsmooth even after having been jeweled.The rifle has taken it's share of animals, but I have a new Winchester model 70 in .308 that is smooth as butter compared to the Remington. I have not shot it since getting the scope rings lapped. While shopping for the .308, I found a Steyr Scout that the bolt felt like it was on ball bearings. Oh it was nice but $$$$$$$$.I was able to get the cheap savage and model 70 out the door for less than the Steyr.
I am just not fond of the bolt on the Remmy.

I felt that the bolt to receiver fit seemed sloppy as it rattled around as I was working the action in the 700. It locked up fine but when it was not locked there seemed to be a lot of excess wiggling between the bolt and receiver. Maybe if it were not so completely dry and had some grease in there my impression would have been different.
