One of 1,440 built for 1961. Unissued, unfired and not converted to the later standard. The last four digits of the SN are in the barrel channel of the stock, on the trigger housing floorplate and on the bolt.

The metal is perfect. The stock has rack and crate dings from traveling to Greece and back.

Dan, had no idea that they put SN's in the barrel channel of these. Was this typical?

It was great to see your rifle! Very nice. I thought I'd post these images of my recent acquisition, documenting a 1963 rifle. It has been used, but apparently lightly. I found an M10 cleaning kit and some old cleaning patches in the butt. I fired off my $25 to the CMP to see if they had any old records of it being sold.

That started when the glass bedding was introduced.

Interesting, a WWII bolt. That looks like a genuine 1963 rifle. The barrel drawing number is indicative of 1963 production as opposed to an earlier rifle that was upgraded. It's interesting to note the SN in the barrel chanel. It's facing the opposite direction from mine. I imagine each builder marked them in his own manner and obviously in his own handwriting.

I thought it was rather neat to own one of the last M1' Springfield "put together." Not quite up there with a ww2 rifle, but I'd like to think that by then Springfield got the M1 right and these are some of the finest ones made. It shoots very well, the trigger pull is awfully sweet compared to my mixmaster SA, and it seems to shoot a bit better but with 63 yo eyes it is hard to make a judgement on a rifle with iron sites. For me the standard Garand rear sight is actually a bit easier to use.

COOL! As far as trigger pull is concerned..I shot the Michigan Garand Championships a month or so ago. The guy weighing triggers said mine broke at the most crisp 5 lb in the field. I told him " It's a Shuff trigger Job!" :)

I have a suggestion. I did this with my Mini-G....

My Mini-G has National Match sights on it. With the shorter sight radius the aperature was too small. Since my hooded aperature for that rifle is a commercial part I decided to open up the hole with a drill bit that was the same diameter as a battle sight. It works perfectly.

Put your original aperature away, buy one from someone like Fulton and open it up as large as you like. PRESTO! It still looks right and your old eyes (like mine) will appreciate it.

I bought my NM in September and it did not have any NM paperwork with it, I bought it knowing of Canfield's admonishment that many of these are faked. Well today I got a response from the CMP documenting my rifle as having been sold by the DCM Oct 1, 1963 and shipped from the Erie Army Depot.

Life is good.
