Afterwards we went to the infamous Haufbrau house to consume many of these:

Some beer tent action the next day:

Then we drove over the Alps to Italy.

By the time we got home we had been to more cities than I can remember! We are already making plans for 2016 to go back.

It's a restaurant now. I was a bit disappointed that there was not much history on display there. Down below there was a bunker system that was pretty interesting with some historical displays. I was hoping to find more info on the US units that made it there.

Just picture standing on that porch and watching hundreds of allied planes flying over those Alps directly at you.

As to the historical displays, the German government isn't to keen in keeping that part of history alive. I was at the Eagles Nest many years ago but due to the weather, was not allowed to go to the top. However, just being at the bottom knowing what the place represented is something.

We were traveling with a friend that just moved to the states in 2007 that is from Munich. He was able to guide us around some. I known this guy for a few years and he still feels embarrassed about WWII. I have to keep reminding him that it wasn't him that caused the war. I was told not to expect much and I understand why but to totally try to remove it from your history is a big disservice. People need to know what others a capable of.

When my wife was in college there was a German girl that she had befriended, one of the assignments was to do a history of the country in which you live or were from...She had completely omitted WW2,and she said they don't talk about it there.

My uncle was stationed there for several years, and lived in a small village and told me when he'd go out to drink, his elderly friends would ask him "how high is the snow in Germany",and then they'd snap to attention and give "the salute",while exclaiming"this high"(all in Deutsch)of course.Different eras, different information and mindsets. It is a shame to ignore history because we all know where that leads!
