I had a loose stock ferrule problem on my mail order rifle from CMP . This stock was from the first batch of birch stocks CMP started putting on their service grades back in 2008. I could never get the ferrule tight enough as the wood kept compressing in that area. Different stock ferrule didn't improve anything. I finally took the stock off the rifle and put it in the corner where it sat for 5 years.

I am going to need that stock soon so I decided to work on it. I wanted to try something different. Instead of building up the wood surface on the stock, I decided to work on the ferrule. I found a stock ferrule where the screw wasn't staked and removed the sling swivel. I used a bench grinder and ground off the surface of the swivel where the screw hole is. I took off an equal amount on both sides of the swivel hole until I got about one half of the original thickness. The stock ferrule is now tight on my stock and it still has room for the swivel to move.

As you can see the top swivel is the one I worked on and now compare it to a normal swivel on the bottom.

Not a bad fix. I had to lower the ferrule on a CMP stock. I had good luck with JB Weld Steel Stick to build up the area. I used Imperial Die Wax (I had it on hand) as a release. Orlando has a post on here on how to do it. If you don't care about getting it off you can epoxy it on without the release as well.
