After 30 years of fishing I had a first happen to me today
Water temp 43 degrees, windy/cold ,had on heavy jacket, rain gear bibs and coat, leather work boots and I walked off the front deck of my bassboat. I'm still not sure what happened it all went in slow motion. I was able to keep from going in head first which was a good thing. It was a long cold ride back to the boat ramp.
Good news is I survived and caught a few crappies. Heres one piggie which may not be much to Southern Boy Crappies standards but here in Ohio its a good un

As a fellow boater/fisherman I can relate to your story. I wear my vest @ all times when fishing. Then again I fish @ night on the cusp of the Atlantic but water is water.

Glad you made it.

Invest in an auto PFD when you're out alone. It's a small price to pay for the insurance.

Front deck on a bassboat is elevated and has only maybe 3 inches tall on sides so its real easy to do. Ive had close calls before but never thought it would happen to me. Wouldnt really be a big deal but with the water temps and all the clothes I had on if I had been by myself the outcome might not have been the same.
I'll ask Santa for a Auto PFD

As a recovering boater I can say that I have done this and have watched a few others do the same. Glad you are OK.

Wow Orlando, I'm sorry to hear about your brush with tragedy. Bad things can happen on the water bro. I'm just darn glad you're okay.

Good to see you survived, No body plans on an accident...That Crappie is just right, I will take a couple of them fryed anyday, or broiled, or I will even clean them..one of my favorite fish to eat..

I started wearing my auto PFD when I got married. I do (did) a lot of solo waterfowl hunting in the Pamlico Sound. I made my wife a deal that I would wear it anytime I went out.

Luckily, I've never had to "use" it in the water.

Thats great, I saw the video on how it inflates, even when Hog-tied.. So it is a life saver, just in case you cannot get back into the boat..The other thing is Prop-ed damage, stay away from the propellar, they can make some nasty cuts...

So what was her end of the deal? I always find it interesting that guys make deals with their wives but the wife has to do nothing.... :)

Come to think of it, I don't recall there was another end of the deal.

I'm just happy that she wants to keep me around!

Are you sure? Have you checked to see if there is a CO2 cartridge installed??

Ha!

As a matter of fact. I was picking up decoys last season and wasn't wearing the PFD. My buddy was running the boat and put it on the hill/in the reeds. When he backed out the PFD was caught in the brush and went over.

POOF! It blew up within seconds of hitting the water. It is suggested that you test the PFD annually... I put a new auto kit and cartridge in it when I got home.

Hell, I'm worth more alive than I am dead so I have that to fall back on!!!

Usually in these cases their side of the deal is to grant us a measure of freedom; in this case, freedom to go out on the water.
