I can't see 7.62x39 cracking the lug off and not the original caliber doing it.It must have been ready to go?

Ah, Ha, I see some interest...I had the rifle refitted with an Surplus barrel..The donor was a P-14 enfield, bore is .311, just right for 7.62x39 ammo..I had the smith fit it to my old WW1 fn 98 mauser rifle..Made a nice Ranch rifle, that shoots cheap surplus ammo...It shot great for less than 100 rounds, then the back safety lug cracked and pulled off the bolt? I have heard some of these bolts could be weak, but really believe the smith did not get the headspace right on the front lugs? How else could the pressure go to the safety lug? Now I am trying to locate another Long 98 bolt for another go...I will need to bend the handle, or cut and weld it, so it will fit under my scope... Since I am still studing gunsmithing, I pulled back on the broken bolt, and detect little space movement from the front lugs...about the width of a dime or less.. Anybody have a spre bolt? I found one on Hoosier gunwork.com, but need to be specific on the phone order..

Okay, I see that I used the incorrect description, Althought the rifle could have been used over there...I mean Mauser professors, I collect them and shoot-em, but there seems to be a big gap here, between repairs and shooting??Anyway I would not want to irritate that first guy with red hair..he has Been thru it??

I never fired it in 8mm. It looked okay, but real rough under the wood stock...you would not think the russian cartridge would put out that power..Shooting steel case ammo, factory china load. report sounded about the same..For peats sake the SKS can and has shot tons of it...???

I stil don't under stand? P14 in 303 or 30-06.
The chambers would be way to big.Did he use an insert in the chamber also?

yes, these guys had a pile of the .303 barrels and converted them to fit..rechambered...I thought they did a nice job of it. I'm not aware of a insert to fit them. I bought the longest they offered at 22 inches long to get the most accuracy out of the little russian round..Made a pretty nice ranch rifle for my budget..until the bolt broke, now I'm going to fix that one one way or the other....need a nice bolt again..Going to test this one, before the extra machine work to turn the handle down..
