For my next project I want a casm center mounted scoped mini-g. I am not much of a hunter but would punch holes in paper at 100 or 200 yards, and for social situations. It would replace a scoped marlin xl-7 30-06 in my arsenal as my primary scoped weapon... My dilemma is should I mag feed it or not? It would sound like a no brainer, mag feeding would make it faster and easier to reload.
Cost is not a primary concern, but I prefer 30-06 over 308 (I have a lot more ammo, plus it would keep ammo compatibility with my other rifles). Also if I mag feed it since I live in a communist state I'd have to chop the bayonet lug off a gas cylinder, I'd only legally be able to use 10 rounds mags, and couldn't use a muzzle brake.
So I'm leaning towards 30-06 mini-g with a holbrook device....
What do you guys think? Is it too much of a pain to reload with the clip fixed in? Should I just quite waffeling and mag feed it?

I'm on the fence also. But, cost is concern for me. I love the thought of the mag. Do not mind the enblocs though. If cost were not a concern, absolutely mag fed.

I'd mag feed it in .308 unless you wanted 35 Whelen.

Ok, What's the best way you think to cut the lug off a GC, (by best I mean the one the looks the cleanest). Cut just the sides of the lug off so a bayonet would not stay on? Or cut the whole lug off and grind it down to the GC? I would probably cut with a dremel and grind down anything with a pneumatic file. (I work for a company that makes these).
I would then send it to Tony G to be refinished before I send the whole rifle to You. I wouldn't want you to get in trouble for sending me back an illegal baby killing assault weapon..

I cut off mine with a hacksaw before I sent my rifle in for Mag-G conversion. Tim cleaned it up real nice before he Parked everything. That is how I handled the evil babykilling feature on mine. I just hate hearing about all those elementery school bayonetings that go on hear in New York State! That require us to mod our rifles for the childrens saftey.

Thanks Mike. Sounds like a project for a snowy fridged Buffalo weekend.
It's just plain retarded...

Justin, the gas cylinder is soft as butter. A hacksaw removes the lug and a flat file will clean it up undetectably. No need to re-finish the cylinder if you don't want to. The mag fed is really coolbut so is the holbrook device and the casm center scope mount without a mag feed. Tim's Whelen is set up that way and it is badazz.

Ermagerd.... please don't deface another gas cylinder. I actually have one from my "sporterized" (read: butchered) Garand that I may part with. PM me if you're interested.
On second thought, it's just too heinous and the GC itself is of such dodgy condition that I should probably just go throw it in the lake.

Yeah I was having a hard time coming to terms with cutting one up too. It's been sitting on my bench for a month just waiting for the dremel.. Then I told myself I'm cutting up a receiver (well not really me) so what difference does a gas cylinder make... What really Pisses me off is that I can't run a Muzzle Brake with it.
I wouldn't let the lug be the feature that determined the direction you take with this, but, AFAIK, the Garand is not specifically named as an assault weapon in the SAFE act. What they did as a catch all was to declare all weapons with a detachable magazine and any one evil feature an assault weapon. That is why you can have an LRB m14 type with box mag, but no evil features, in NY without registering it. So, if you were to skip the mag fed, you can keep everything else, Lug, muzzle device, even colapsable stock/pistol grip if you want. So you just need to decide if the detachable box mag is more important to you than the other features.

Jgun,
Your exactly right on the laws, and deciding if the Mag is worth loosing the other features. I'm not too concerned at this point on the bayonet lug so we'll forget about it for the sake of decision making. What I'm looking for is a center mounted scope on a Mini-G. Just because, no real reason. Just to put some holes in paper, maybe hunting at some point (4 or possibly 2 legged predators). So my options are 30-06 Mini-G w/ holbrook device or Magfed Mini-G in 308.
I prefer 30-06 (Only have to stock one Caliber, a bit more velocity, ect), and would like a muzzle brake (want to make sure my neighbors at the range go deaf), which if I go mag fed 308 I loose because of NY's stupid laws.
The question is really if the holbrook device is too cumbersome to load or not with the CASM mount. If it's not then I'm leaning towards 30-06 with holbrook...
I guess the happy median might be to go 308 Mini-G w/Holbrook, keep the lug and brake, but if it's too much of a pain to load send it back in for the 'change'....
Decisions.. :)

If I'm understanding the Holbrook device, it's advantage is that it locks the bolt back and retains the enbloc. Would I be correct in understanding that you intend to single load the retained enbloc? Although a retained enbloc that you could eject at will sounds good, I'm not sure that I'd want to be restricted to single loading an enbloc that that was captured by the CASM, unless it was a dedicated hunting/target gun. Maybe you could come up with something with a center mounted flip to side scope and a Holbrook? I've got an AR with a flip to side Eotech magnifier, wasn't there a flip to side optic mount made for the military garands at one time? I know the D's had the scope offset the left side but I thought I saw a flip to side Garand scope mount somewhere.
I forgot to ask, does the CASM fit the Garand? I thought it was designed for the M14/M1A?

There is a version for the Garand, the same thing, just a bit longer for the longer action..

yep thats how it works...
That looks good on there. Have you tried the Scout mounted EER scope setup yet? Is there a reason you're considering the CASM setup over that? I think I could come up with a hinged rail setup to flip the scope to the left, but the question is, would you ever sell enough of them to make it worth the work.

The brake bit was removed from Safe do to a spelling error. Will they put it back? Who knows.
Some of the M1a guys modded their mag releases. They feed via stripper clips now. They believe their gun is now compliant as it no longer has a detachable mag.
Where there is a will, there is a way.

I know they spelled it wrong in the Bill, but really? They struck it because of that spelling error?
Yeah I know about the M14 mods, I did one myself but ultimately sold the rifle, and bought 2 Garands.

Like the ultimak rail? I have one that I am going to put on the 30-06 Mini-G, I'll probably put a Leupold 2.75x on it. Center mount scopes usually have more magnification and can have BDC reticules. So I was going to do one too. I just liked the CASM mount idea and wanted to try it out. There is no need here, just a middle aged, conservative, God fearing, white male with extra money to spend. :)
I use one of these mounts to run a magnifier behind an Eotech red dot sight. If I were going to try to mount a center mount flip to side optic on a Garand, I would probably try to adapt one or two mounts like these by attaching them to a piece of picatinney rail, and then mounting my scope rings to that. depending on the weight of your optic, you might be able to use just one flip mount, attached to the rear sight area like the HOPCO mount does, and a pad on the front of the rail resting on the receiver (like the CASM) to support the optic against the front of the receiver during recoil. The Samson mount is pretty pricey but there are other similar mounts that are more reasonable. If you were willing to permanently attach a front flip to side to the receiver as well, it would probably be very sturdy. http://www.opticsplanet.com/samson-quick-flip-modular-aimpoint-3x-magnifier-mount-arms-base.html

I have the Amega Rail on my Mini-G with a Leupold 2.5 EER scope. I Love the Scout set up. But if I had to do it again I would go with the Ultimak. I have heard that with the right set of rings you can co-witness the iron sights. I do however use Warne QD rings in all my scopes so quick scope removal and installation is not a problem. There is a picture of the set up in the photo section.

When mine comes back from Tim, I'm thinking that I'd like to see if I can set it up so that I can mount a magnified optic while retainging the ability to use the irons below it through the rings. I have found that I've never been able to cowitness iron sights looking through a magnified optic, only with an unmagnified red dot. The problem with what I have in mind is that it will be a compromise between ideal cheek weld between the two, and I would likely have to mount to scope a little higher than what I see on most of the EER scoped Mini G's. Much as I like they way they look, better without the scout scopes, I think I'm going to do much better with my bad eyesight, if I've got a low power optic for the longer shots.

Well I took the plunge. I chopped my bayonet lug off this afternoon. Just waiting for a shipping box to come from Fulton Armory (I like their padded shipping containers) then it's off to MI to become a Mag Fed Mini-G.
Justin
Good choice, that ought to be a lot easier to use compared to to single loading around the CASM from the top, and maybe faster than the enblocs as well. Aside from the M14 gas cylinder/piston you'll essentially have a Garand receivered SOCOM. Looking forward to seeing the finished rifle with scope mounted (and hearing how it shoots). Good luck with it.
