View Full Version : What do you guys look for when buying a stripped receiver?

I'll admit my Garand knowledge is more at the level of an educated consumer, not an expert. But I'm pretty picky about the sight serrations when I look at receivers, but I see some going on forums (like cmp forum) for pushing $400 and the sight serrations look toast from what I can tell.

Like this one for example, I would have passed on it all day long:

1360

Am I being too picky? What do you guys look for when looking for receivers?

I don't know that there's anything wrong with those serrations. There could be but if they click they click. Even if the serrations aren't A+ you can make up for a lot of sin with a great elevation knob teat.

By the way, the only thing I look for are the sight serrations, oprod track, is it a welded together receiver. Notice I didn't say a welded receiver, for myself I don't care much if it's a drill rifle or a repair to the heel done. Heck, they've come from the CMP with arsenal welds to the ears and heel. Then you have the IHC's where the legs were annealed to bend them straight. Nothing much bothers me if you can make the things work.

The serrations must be nice and crispy. Like this:

I also like green Parkerizing like this Breda:

Now this receiver does not have the nice green Parkerizing, but look at the lines. Everything is perfectly straight. Look at the oprod track. This is a perfectly machined receiver. This is what I look for.

Here is another perfect receiver. Notice the lack of wear and the beautiful polish. Beretta did good work.

Fulton Armory sells a rear sight elevation repair disk. I have never used one; however, one of these might be useful in repairing worn rear sight serrations

That Nice Italian reciever about covers it..No one mentioned pitting, but one of mine has some where the wood meets it..I always like to check the sight disc, the op rod track, then flip it over and check inside where the bolt slides along the inside..Even the best welder would have a hard time covering a joint in there... I agree about welding, some of it doesn't hurt if it was cosmetic...Some of the latest drill rifles from CMP show Gorilla welds holding the bolt closed at the top of reciever..Don't like those myself.I could never make it look right, plus I worry it might split there from the heating...

And this is what the rear sight pocket and receiver heel should look like:

Fluffy, the heel on that receiver isn't up to snuff Sir. You have very poor machining on the entire back radius and the rear sight pocket looks like it took a meteor hit. Look at the bright side though, the color matches your kitchen counter top :)

Oh, and look at the dark area between the sight ears, poor heat treating. It's a shame to see a potentially nice piece like that fall short :(

Why would those things be a problem if you can shoot one like fluffy has?

Bill,
You actually don't have everything completed with your enormous parts hoard? ;)

Parts take up less room than completed rifles:) These are my rainy day projects when I'm to old to hump trash cans

You'll never be too old to do that, at a government pace.

This seems to be happening with all government employees. I'm going to report this miracle to oboombya so that it can have the secret to job production for the public sector.

On a serious not, I have no idea what's going on, I haven't had it happen to me yet. I'll get with the forum guy and ask him.

I look for pitting, receiver face, sight serrations, heel cracks.. and welding. I never cared too much about finish as that can be fixed.

I look for signs of a remil before wear. I bought a beautiful factory-finish 8/43 receiver, then noticed where the welds had been ground off and cold blued on the front face where the (plugged) barrel had been welded on.
