I have a barreled receiver that I am putting together. When I put the follower in, it is very tight, it will not move up and down. It's like the legs are bent in. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks
Jo

You have actually tried several followers and none of them fit between the legs? You have an issue man. Fixing this, if this is what's wrong, would require heating the legs and bending them back to spec. That sounds like a tall order but it probably has good chances of working.

Does it look like they are bent in? Is it noticeable or do you think just enough to cause it to bind? Can you modify the cheaper part (follower) by removing just enough material so it moves freely? If not just chop the legs off and mag feed it..

Seriously good luck sir, I hope you get it resolved..

How about trigger group, does it bind?

How clean are the receiver slots that the follower rides in ? Is there a build up of old dried grease or gunk in the slots ?

Maybe I shouldn't have done it but I took it for granted that jjones would have checked these types of things.

I agree with you 100%, but sometimes we overlook the simplest solution when working on a problem.

I made the same assumption.. But while we are on it, it's not backwards is it? You can put them in backwards, don't ask me how I know.

I have checked the slots for old dry grease, and dirt. I have tried several different followers, and all are the same. I won't ask how jdkf1003 knows that they will fit backwards, but mine isn't. The trigger group locks up fine, and the reciever fits snugg in the stock. I am have to find a fix for it, it's the only prewar receiver I have.

I would modify the cheapest part first, file on the follower until it slides smoothly

I'm guessing that if you file the follower and use it, the rounds won't load/feed right. It's cheap to find out but it's my guess.

Hey, do you have a fat bullet guide? One that really spreads the legs apart? If you have such a guide, how does the follower fit with the fat bullet guide in? Of course you could make a bullet guide a little extra wide by adding some weld to it. It's brainstorming time now.

Does the follower/slide bind the same from the top to bottom of the receiver legs or is it just tighter at the bottom?

It is doing it at the bottom. I finally Found a follower that works. Now when I put the rifle in the stock, and lock the trigger housing in, the bolt will not slide freely. If I unlock the trigger, it works fine. I guess I get to do a little stock work.

A nice wide bullet guide might do the trick and make it nice for any follower. I'm a bit lost as to why the bolt will not slide freely, unless you mean it's rubbing against the hammer. It should do that.

The bolt is locking to the rear, and has to be forced forward when you push down the follower. If I loosen the trigger guard, it works fine. I will look for a wide bullet guide.

This seems damn odd.

Did it come to you as a barreled receiver versus an assembled rifle? If so, maybe a welded receiver, or possibly previous owner had receiver in a vise to do some work and squeezed it a bit. Am thinking re-weld.

The receiver came from dupage. I would think they would tell me if it was a reweld. It has been sitting in my safe since I got it from them. I don't know who had it before them. I really don't think it is a reweld. I will be taking some wood off the stock, and finding a wide bullet guide, I hope that takes care of it. The stock came from dupage also.

Most rifles I've seen rely on the bullet guide to set the spacing for the receiver legs. I have seen people that have filed them down because they felt they fit too tight. That is a sure way to bind the follower. As far as the bolt locking is your trigger group properly assembled? Forcing the hammer spring housing in backwards will lock things up nicely. Posts some pics. I'm visually oriented.

I think my bolt problem is in the stock. I can see where the oprod is hitting the stock. I will take some wood off, and see how that works, and try and post some pics later today

Is it walnut or laminate?

Have you tilt tested it?

Here she is. The bolt problem was all in the stock. It was rubbing the oprod.

Dang Tim. They don't learn us to good down here. I thought you might look at the rifle instead of my kids art work. He sprayed the tree too, did you notice that.
