As some of you may know I have become obsessed with 1903 drill rifles. Well today while removing the barrel from my 4th drill rifle project, I proved I am a monumental IDIOT and may have to have my tools taken away.
Now for the lesson I learned today, you can not easily remove the barrel with the bolt closed. In my rush to get the barrel off I forgot to remove the bolt. Let the admonishment begin.
Mike
PS: the extractor is the weak point.

Is the damage permanent, or can it be repaired?

Extractor is toast, the receiver seem to be fine a barrel screws right in. The threads right under the extractor cut are a little facaakta, but do not seem to be a problem.

FYI, you can do the same thing with Garands and Carbines too. Good post Axe Man.

Well, At least you admitted it here...So you managed to break it loose? You must have over the standard 2 foot long bar handle for your rig....Anyway, hope the damage to #4 is not very bad..

Once I got it to move, I clamped the reciever wrench in the vise and used a 48 inch pipe wrench. And still did not see the closed bolt! I may need a new reciever wrench though....
