M1D Rear Handguard

How much shorter is the M1D handguard than a M1 handguard? I have a Italian .308 conversion build underway and before I cut a regular length one I may have a line on a 'D' style guard. Thanks in advance.ZB

Cut the rear hand guard in the middle of the clip recess and taper the edge to fit under the metal block.

I believe the 2 are the same .
If not I may have the Italian short one .
