New RPK day!

I've owned a couple AKs in the past and kinda had the itch to get another. So I stopped at one of our local shops today and saw this beauty. It's a Century Arms (I know, I know) AES-10B RPK. It is a genuine RPK made at the Cugir factory in Romania. Not one of these pieced together atrocities that came out on the market years prior to this one.

The fit and finish is what you'd expect from an AK variant. It's a whole lot tighter than the WASR-10's anyway. I haven't shot it yet, but after the Garand Match this weekend I'm hoping to run a couple hundred rounds through it. Then my project next week is to refinish the wood.

Any RPK owners in the house? I'd be curious to know how the club butt stock comes off. On all AKs I've owned in the past there was a hole under the cover that you could pry the wood out once the screws have been removed. No such luck with a rubber mallet either.

OOOHHHH.......I didn't know those were even available. I'm gonna have to take a break from building Garands and get me one.
I've owned a dozen different AK's over the years and only have one in my inventory right now. It's the very first one I ever bought. A Steyr/Maadi that I bought in 1984. It's lonely being stuck in teh vault with nothing but some SKS's for company.
As for refinishing the wood..some amber shellac applied directly over the laminate stocks is traditional. And you could do that with the wood on the rifle and be factory correct. :)

Captain Bob, nice looking AK please report back how it shoots. I've had a number of AK's 47's and 74's I don't know that manufactures make a difference in how they shoot. They all sound like trashing machines to me. I will give them credit however when you pull the trigger it's going to go bang. One the last stocks I took off was to install a metal folding stock. The wood stock was a wooly bugger to get out. After I removed all screws, the tab which went in the wood beat it with a mallet I ended up cutting it off and drilling holes in the remain wood until I could knock it out. I had one from Egypt which fell out so it just depends on the stock and the AK. Good luck with the project.

I picked up a 75 round drum and 80 more rounds of ammo for it at lunch. I'll post back on Sunday with a range report.

Very nice looking rifle. I love the AK platfrom. Century has been paying much better detail to the assembly.

I stained the stock and finished it with some tru-oil. I think it made it look a hell of a lot better. I'm pretty impressed how well she shoots. No problem with sub 3 inch groups out at 100 yards. If I were to take my time I'm sure I could get even tighter than that.

I've only loaded it twice now and no problems as of yet.
I believe it is chinese if that means anything.
