What is the max accurate distance with the mini-g? I'm pondering one for elk and deer hunting, shooting out to at least 400 yards.

Shorter barrels don't really affect accuracy as we think of it. The accuracy loss is generally from less velocity, and shorter sight radius. The sight radius is easily overcome with an optic. The Velocity is not, but with a high power cartridge like the 30-06 it's not really that much of an issue at intermediate ranges.
I have not shot mine over 100yards, but I consider mine an upto 600yds max rifle. A guy on here shot a deer at 225yds without any hiccup. Your going to loose a couple hundred FPS out of a G, But I think out to 400yds drop shouldn't be that bad.
Using Nikon Spot on Calculator:
Federal AE 150gr FMJBT 30-06 at 400yds will have a velocity of 2059 fps and Energy of 1414 flbs.
If I customize the load and drop the velocity to 2700fps the drop is about 6" more and a velocity of 1891fps and an energy of about 1190 fps.
I think that's still well within deer killing range at 400 yards, and of course an optic can be set to whatever zero you want.
I chose the AE load just because there was a posted velocity on here out of a mini-g so I could make the comparison. If you use heavier hunting loads your data might be a little different. I think I'd use 150gr Hunting loads in this case and opt for more velocity over mass.

I'm planning on running at least 165 grain core-lokt ammo. I believe the mini would be an awesome elk gun!

Obviously this is all theoretical, does not take into account expansion, shot placement, yada yada yada but:
165gr remington sp corelokt at the standard 2800fps:
distance fps/ftlbs
400yds: 1816/1209
500yds: 1611/951
600yds: 1427/746
Lets lop 200fps off for a shorter barrel and rerun the calculator for 2600fps MV:
400yds: 1663/1013
500yds: 1473/795
600yds: 1307/626
I don't know what energy threshhold your looking for for elk. But I would say 500yds would be prob the max with deer if your taking the 800 ftlbs as minimum.
Also The gun is about as accurate as a standard garand, so your talking 2-3moa with good ammo, at 600 yards your looking at a 12-18" area. I don't know that I'm skilled enough to take a deer at that range with anything other than a bolt gun.

for elk my max distance will probably be 200-300 yards, probably the same for deer. would 180 grain bullet be better?

Lighter projectiles can usually be pushed faster and stay within the same pressure limits, that would give you more 'range', at the expense of mass.
But at 200-300 yards I think your GTG with just about any hunting ammo in 30-06. Upto 400yds I think is possible, much above that I think you might pushing it, Tim or other more avid hunters may be able to chime in on that.

Tim also had a video floating around of mule deer hunt with a mini-g nice kill, don't know the range though.

Thank you for the info sir! I believe I'm going to pull the trigger but need to clear it with the wife lol

Good luck. I just make sure I have equal number of packages going out as I do coming in, regardless of value.

The Max? Speaking for myself only with my 35 G, 500 yards on Elk. I did take mine last year at just about 310 yards. I really wouldn't want to shoot at 500 yards though without more practice. I only had access to a 500 yard range just before my hunt last year and even though I did well at that range, I had no confidence for live animals. I used a 3x9 on my rifle.
I must say though, I am that guy. I always seek to stretch what people think should be able to be done. I enjoy shooting at the outside range of whatever device I'm using.

Hey tim, what modification would need done to my amega ranges scout mount?

Same as with the Ultimak, $90 extra for the mod on a new conversion.

Thank you very much Tim! one more question, I want to shoot 165 grain core-lokt ammo. Is that okay to run in the mini g?

You can run any factory ammo that will feed in a Garand.

600 yards is far piece, but certainly would not stand there and believe i was safe at that range..

I eventually want to put a Schuster muzzle brake on, does that make a difference when I send the gun?

Ok, here's a stupid question. Has anyone had any luck with using 215 / 230gr VLD Berger bullets through a Mini-G? The muzzle vel would be low but those suckers will coast a LONG way (.6 G1 BC)

Give it a whirl, just back the schuster out a ways before trying it. I've shot 300 grains out of my Whelen.
