1911 Pricing Help

Hi all. I'm new to 1911s and am planning to purchase my first Colt soon. I want a Series 70, blued model 01970A1CS. Gun Broker has them anywhere from $999-$1250 for a stock pistol NIB but more often than not, GB is way overpriced. Online, I found a guy near me locally with one, NIB, that even has the "100 Year of Service" rollmark on the slide. He said, "make me an offer". Anybody have some intel on what a fair price on this pistol should be? Thanks.

I don't see why you would have. Even by inflated GunBroker prices you made a fair offer.

That's what I thought too. He said he paid more than that for it, NIB, 3 years ago. It does have the "100 Years of Service" rollmark but I don't think that would drive the price up so much....maybe 100 bucks or so. Maybe he's still upset he paid too much for it.

I think a lot of people are upset with the prices they've paid for things in the last few years....If it was NIB never fired and I REALLY wanted one maybe $1100 but you're just paying for the name.

I think Colts are over priced.I'm not telling you not to buy one,but I wouldn't.
I have a Sig 1911 I think you get more for your money and I'm cheap (ask Orlando,) I bought a Kimber Raptor, I sold it.I bought a Smith PD1911 I sold it.
Now I have the Sig and a Springfield V10 custom shop.I love both. also have a Wart hog It's over priced but I like the high capacity.
My 2 cents worth. Good luck in what ever you decide.

Not sure of the consensus on the Springfield Arms MilSpec 1911 around here, but my son just bought one a few months ago for around $700. It is really a nice gun, well, well worth the money in my opinion - a real value. He has put several hundred rounds thru it without a hiccup, right out of the box it shot well. When he was considering buying a 1911 I looked at Remingtons, Rugers, and yes Colt - I did not see a Sig. But ignoring the name Colt, I would have chosen the Springfield gun. You might consider that unless you are determined to own a Colt.

I bought my series 70 for $385.00 - in 1980. Money well spent, it is still with me. I have never regretted a gun purchase, can't really say that about the rest of my retirement portfolio.

Care to sell me your Series 70? ;) thanks for the tips fellas. I do like the Springfields and S&W "E" series as well. Never looked at the SIG 1911s. Even the new Remington's look nice. Always wanted a Colt though. My guess is the 1911 bug will bite me and before it's all said and done, I will own one of each!

That you will! I bought my first 1911 when I got back from Germany in 2012; a Springfield Loaded. It was an awesome gun and I wish I still had it. I then bought Rock Island 10mm, then a Dan Wesson Guardian, a Mimber Pro-Carry 2, a Dan Wesson Specialist, ANOTHER Dan Wesson Guardian, a Para P14.45, a Les Baer Thunder Ranch, and have now settled on a Les Baer Ultimate Tactical Carry and a Concept IX. The wife carries the Mimber Pro Carry 2 with an Ed Brown bobtail.

Like others have said, if you REALLLLLLY want a Colt then a series 70 is the one to get. I don't own any nor will I. You'd think a $1000+ Colt would at least have a MIM main spring housing....but not, it's plastic. No thanks Colt.

For around $1300-1400, if you can swing it, Dan Wessons are just about the best bang for your buck in the 1911 market today. They are very well built guns and about as good as you're going to get outside of the semi-custom jobs. They are ALL FORGED STEEL, unlike Colts, SAs, Sigs, and Kimbers. SA 1911s are very fine guns and wont let you down by any means. I would just rather save a bit more and only have to buy once. I thought I would be happy with my SA, then I had this insatiable desire to upgrade.

I still wish I has my SA as a platform for a Clark Custom 460 Rowland conversion....

In the $1500-2k range Les Baer is the way to go. All forged steel and EVERYTHING is hand fit. Even at over double the cost of a mil spec SA, the Les Baers are worth it. Not to mention the 3" at 50 guarantee on every gun with the option of a 1.5" guarantee. You can find them used if you look real hard for cheap; I bought my Ultimate Tactical Carry WITH a Milt Sparks holster from a local cop for $1300...
