I wouldnt have believed it until I witnessed it with my own eyes. They were cutting trees back from the railroad tracks behind the City garage at work. Needless to say we got a late start that day :) I havent ever heard of such a operation but was really pretty neat, has to be expensive but when you figure on how much faster it can be done compare to cutting by hand its supposed to be cheaper

I give it 2 years until it's illegal. One accident, just one, it will be "for the children".

I saw them cut back a power line using a helicopter. It happened to be during deer season... I'm glad I wasn't in a tree where they were cutting!

I wonder what the tree trimmers union has to say about this.

I think it'll be banned eventually. the govt just doesn't know about it yet.

It's already started some clown, on the linked newspaper article, posted that it should be illegal because of the risk to children :)

There are some Youtube videos showing power line workers working from a helicopter.

Actually, there are several unusual operations using Helos: Christmas tree hauling, animal herding, hunting.

I'm an ex-rotor head. Flew Cobras and Kiowa Warriors. Got to do some pretty high speed stuff over the years.

We had an MD-500 do some power line connections behind my house a while back (connecting hi voltage tension wires). Guy just rode around suspended via line from the helo.
Son of a rotor head. Stories of what my dad did in Cobras and a Cayuse just defined imagination (like starting earthquakes and forest fires with 76 rippled rockets)
Best adrenaline rush I've ever had was flying a TH-57 (once).

I got a phone call last week from my youngest son, the Marine, stationed at 29 Palms, CA.

He had been assigned to ride around in the civilian contracted range flight checking road guards and range access.

Turns out the guy flying the old Huey also flew Kiowas and knew me from back in the day.

The flight made the young Marine's day.
