barrel question

I received a 'grabbox' of Garand parts and there is a barrel that has me with a couple of questions. It is a '54 HRA barrel and it looks like it only has two sets of lands and grooves. There is also a small hole partway through the barrel at the base of the barrel threads. Is this normal for this manufacturer? I have not seen this in any of the other barrels I have.

No such thing as a 2 groove Garand barrel, Sounds like it could be a 1903 barrel sleeved into a Garand stub.I havent ever seen one myself but have heard of them

Barrels were not made in 2 groove for a Garand...In 4 groove and in 6 grooves..It could be spliced at the chamber, there will be a tiny line on a good job, to a 1903 barrel..They had 2 grooves and alot of those barrel were produced, also Johnson rifle barrels were spliced..

Forgive my poor camera skills and older camera. The barrel has two definite large grooves and lands compared to to other barrels I have laying about. The muzzle end has the same dimensions as the others. The toothpick indicates the small hole partially drilled into the barrel. There is also no small groove for the lower band pin but it looks like someone has tried to fit a pin anyways. Okay, now was this hole placed here at the screws in chamber, in a dwat or demil move? Used to be years ago I saw a few with holes drilled into barrels and chambers..None of the barrels I have are sporting such a hole..talking about the one with the tooth pick... You said it does not go thru to the inside?

The hole goes about 1/2 the thickness of the barrel . All around it is in great condition with solid rifling,sharp threads, muzzle gauges excellent and if indeed it was sleeved I can't find any indication of where it was done. If it is safe to use as a shooter I would like to do so, if not let me know and I will put it aside for a future display build.

ZBeast, back in the 70's Garands were few and far between. The only source was private sales or the DCM. It wasn't a Garand orgy like it is today. Anyway, the gov't destroys the Garands but free men figure out a way to save them. Elmer Ballance bought "scrap metal" from the gov't and built some beautiful M14 receivers out of it. Then the ATF stepped in and rounded them all up, but I think there are a few out there.
Anyway, back on subject. De-milled M1 barrels were cut just past the chamber, reamed out, and new barrels made from 03a3's were silver soldered in. (which is what the hole in question is about-probably the solder hole)The 03 barrels were re-contoured and machined to match the M1. A lot of work but when all you have is lemons you make lemonade.
It is a bit labor intensive but someone like Tim is able to do the modification.

Just curious, but I would assume it would just mount like a normal barrel? Does the hole need to be filled? I think it'd be a cool project to get it shooting, there is something about 2 groove barrels I just like.

There is something poetic about beating a democrat with a gun barrel.
