Is there any life left in a Garand hammer that I took too much metal off the rear hooks?
Can I add material to get the 2 stage trigger back? I went too far and no work to the sear will bring it back...
On a side note, the trigger pull rivals my 7mm Rem mag!

I think your toast. Even if you could build it back up I would never trust it on a trigger. Too many bad things can happen. I'd just pickup a replacement and chalk it up to educational costs...
On second thought an 8 shot burst might be kinda cool...

I already purchased a replacement and the trigger group is back together.
I'll tell if you promise not to laugh... actually it's ok if you do.
After a couple of hours trying to get the trigger pull down with a file I got frustrated and used my 1" belt sander. After one hit the weight went to 5# with zero creep. Being late and tired, I thought another .25# was a good idea...
Rather than using a fine file I used the belt sander again. I tend to get impatient at times.
I hope this brings a smile to you, if not a good chuckle!

You can add weight back to the hammer, I will take some pics showing you how. I always stop my triggers around 5- 5 1/2 lbs

10-4. I would have to do quite a bit to the sear (I believe) to get weight back. I won't trash the hammer just yet, but it'll go in a remote area of the parts bin.
5# felt great... lesson learned. It was the second one I did that evening. I plan to limit my work to 1 per evening in the future.

Ha, glad to see your post..I felt bad about working the hooks with 600 wet or dry ..My Needle files just did not fit right...But it really slicked it up.. been trying to figure out a cheap way to measure the pull now...it is light, but butter smooth...I also bought a couple spares just in case..

Here is another question I have.
What component of the trigger group causes length of travel? The length of the first stage on one rifle is really long (the trigger sits farther to the rear), whereas a different rifle will not have as much travel. Both triggers weigh 6#. The longer length is a very dark park HRA group, including the spring.
I suspect the difference is in the hammer spring. The longer travel rifle has a "mushy" feel to the hammer drop (sounds & feels slow compared to the shorter travel trigger). The snap when the hammer falls is quite different.
I plan to get a couple spare springs and experiment.
