Hello Gentlemen,

I am looking for a popular consensus on which oil to use on a VERY dry stock.

Thanks in advance on any and all opinions.

flip a coin, either will work. Personally I use BLO on Garand stocks. If you use Tung oil make sure its not Tung Oil finish unless you wanta shiney finish

I've used KleenStrip BLO (Home Depot) and Pure Tung Oil from Rocklerwood working. I like BLO Better. KleenStrip dries quick and it can be recoated faster. PTO seems to take FOREVER to dry.

YMMV.

I prefer the tung oil. These 2 stock sets were done with each finish. The top is tung oil and the bottom is BLO. The tung oil set got 2 coats of a 50/50 tung oil and citrus solvent base coat that sucks in quick. I let it set before the next coats go on. It does take longer to do as each coat takes longer to set than the previous one. 7 weeks to get 9 coats on. The BLO was thinned with pure turpentine and stinks up the house. It also builds up on the stock and makes fitting the receiver very tight. Use pure tung oil, not the big box crap. http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q699/falover57/006_zpse151d1b1.jpg (http://s1354.photobucket.com/user/falover57/media/006_zpse151d1b1.jpg.html)

Thanks! They are Dupage stocks which are made for them by Boyd's. I got the unfinished ones so I could try my hand at those two finishes. I have lots of time and a patient better half that let me use the kitchen table for these projects.:D

Are those stained at all, or just oiled?

Just the oil/thinner and then straight oils for the finish. The tung oil appears to keep on darkening as it sets.

p.s. when using tung oil use caution with disposal of any rags etc. as spontaneous combustion may occur.

Good info, just rec. one of the Dupage, boyds unfinished stocks too.. It has some nice looking grains, like yours, Don't believe I will use any stain either..OG.

These were all done with blo and hand rubbed vigorously afterwards, hence the shine.
