How Many Are Left?

Here is a question that I have been wondering on. Of all the millions of Garands that were built just how many have survived? How many were lost to U-boats, the storming of Europe's beaches, left on Pacific islands. Destroyed by the US government? Nothing exact but a close guestimate.

That close guess, is as good or best as anybody elses....How may tons of war material went to the bottom of the atlantic ocean in WW2? Funny no one ever has shown any rifles in cases that come from the ocean floor...I have noticed a few Lend-lease rifles that heavy pitting or salt damages? there is a garand list being compiled that shows serial numbers and some owners...

I wonder how many are still in service! I know the Philippines is doing a program to convert them to M14 magazines (and 7.62), Italy (and Argentina, among others) had BM59 programs, and there's still a lot sitting in warehouses worldwide.

I remember a photo of Vietnam, A huge dump of ruined weapons, You could make out carbines, Garands, lots of other us gear including a few miniguns that had burned?.Carbines and Garands , and Thompsons, had been shipped to Ho chi mihn[ a Allie at the time} at the start of ww2 to help fight the japs..Tons of ammo which they shot back at us when we Interceded in Viet country? A little fact of history..

I have 2, so that makes 4,000,011. Seriously I think Shuff's 4 Million number is a decent guess, I would say 3 Million if I had to guess. I would think 50% by now have been lost, scrapped, or turned into Drill Rifles (or CMP Grade C receivers). My Grandfather ditched his on Iwo Jima when it filled with sand, It's a good possibility it's in the pacific now.

I heard a rumor at one point that the CMP/DCM has processed under 1 Million, but I have no clue.
