Can you help me ID this pistol?

My Dad landed with 9th ID on January 1st 1967. He was a medic with 1/11 Field Arty "On Time".

The caption on the back of the pic says, "This clean cut fellow was putting a call to his Girl. He said something about the end, if she didn't answer."

Can you help me ID the make and type of pistol in his hand? I have no idea about the 1911. I came up in the M9 days...

No way to tell manufacture from a picture , most likely a 1911A1

Yeah, 1911. But make is impossible to ascertain from the pic. There were several manufacturers including Singer Sewing Machine...

Thanks guys. What has my interest piqued is the 1911 kits that Sarco has for sale. I was thinking it would be a neat way to get into the 1911 game... until I started reading about how it's done. Sounds like a major pain in the ass. So I started to think that maybe it would be easier and cheaper to just find one of these old government models.

We'll see how it goes... just testing the waters at the moment.

I love MilSurp, an actual US MilSurp 1911 will prob cost you a cool $1K, unless you can get luck locally, or snag one in an auction at the last minute. If you don't mind Repro, there are several nice GI clones out on the market, for very reasonable prices. I love my Springfield GI 1911.

What companies make the best repros?

I love my Springfield GI, but they don't make them any more, you can find them used though. The Springfield Milspec is close but has some upgraded features. If you want bone stock GI, Rock Island armory is spoken well of, Auto Ordanance has one as well. If you want a nice upgraded pistol that keeps the GI character and is US made look at the Para Ordnance GI Expert.

Kimber makes a nice 1911, I have one and have never had a problem with it.

Yup, jbkf1003 is spot-on: roughly $1000 +/- for US MIL Surp. +1 for Springfield Armory and their GI line of 1911's that are reasonably priced.

I have both expensive and cheap 1911's. My very first 1911 (which I still have ) was a High Standard. A cheaper, no frills handgun I think you can get them for under $400 now . It never has failed me,. its my bedside iron now. For your first I think it would be a good option

This one is missing a lot of finish, but it's not a horrible price.
