Mag Fed mini G Project

I latched onto a tanker garand in 308 with the thought of having Tim convert it to a mag fed rifle this winter. I checked the headspace and the bolt will close on my 1.638 field gauge. I have a new 65 series bolt that seems to be a tighter fit, but it still closes. From what I read it isn't safe to shoot. Is there anything that can be done to improve the head space?

I can test the action with a field bolt and see if a bolt exists that would work. Of course, if the barrel is the problem, a new barrel could be added.
