It is Wood........probably stained beech :)

Well the key is that it has some of the WRA features and one little known fact is that Winchester continued to make wood after WWII for replacement help since they had the machinery. I heard this from a fella who worked there after the war. I have always felt it was a WRA with the indents on the side but there is no proof except that it is not a WWII guard. Rick B

Looks like the SA "dash" crimp marks to me. I say it's SA.

I think I was told once that the WRA guard has sharper bottom angles then the SA, HRA, Overton guards. That is to say, the bottom of the guard does not have such a pronounced flat bottom. I'm thinking this was Rick B who put that in print on the CMP forum some time back.

Tim is correct, and there is more work done to make sure it isn't a guard that was sanded.

I have been asked by a well known author to help with wood identification and am now looking over the section to see what I can do and or let out. If I let it all out for this book that will be it for my future of a book. If I don't help out I feel like crap. I am caught between a rock and a hard place and asking for credit besides a name lumped in at the end of the book. I have spent allot of years putting information out and only a hand full like Tim actually mention that I helped or said it. I usually get someone saying its old info and they knew all about it which can get to me sometimes. I feel bad that I helped by telling allot years ago. This book by the way is one many people have been waiting for for many years. It is so loaded with info it really is sick and it came together from all the notes from a big shot in the industry back then. I swear this book without my help with be one of those many will talk about for years. That is in part why I really think I should help as much as I can. Rick B

Rick, I was just thinking about this yesterday. I said to myself, "self, it sure would be nice if Rick Borecky would write a book on M1 wood identification. Maybe I should email him and ask him if he's thought about it. I know he's helped me a couple of times."

Seriously. That's what I thought yesterday. Interesting that this came up today!

I have no problem identifying my wood. It's just like any other average white wood, but collecting too much dust lately.

You do realize he only copied what folks told him and did no real research for the book. He took stuff off the internet which we know doesn't mean it is true. He took allot of good peoples information including Wayne Bradford and myself and gave no credit and was asked by Wayne to keep everything he talked about private. He said the info he had of mine was not mine. He is a real wise guy getting money of people for coping and pasting. Allot of what he did was plagiarized. Rick B

Thanks Orlando. I have-including ones that are on rifles-about 15 handguards. I would guess one of them may be WRA-at least statistically. Stu
