35 whelen

I don't know, why 30/06? Why .308? Why .270? Why does it hold 8 rounds? Why do you need a Garand? Why do you need a gun? Why do you need to live in california? Why do fools fall in love?

My favorite cartridge is probably 35 Whelen. I really like the caliber. It knocks down big things. It is very accurate with little elevation needed to 300 yards and 300 yards is all I can shoot with open sights.

No, I won't take orders till they have those barrels. I have been trying to get them since late last year.

They could offer AI but they won't, they'll have a tough enough time selling the standard ones. The barrels are new.

Criterion can hardly sell the gas trap barrels, they aren't going to be able to sell a niche item as you are asking about Centurion. Those types of things are probably items that a barrel reboring shop would have to do.

You get a used .308 barrel, send it off to a re borer. Then you rent a roughing reamer and finish reamer, ream for headspace. Presto :) You can go without the roughing reamer but it's a looooooooooooong ream...

Oh, the bore job will be North of $300. Reamer rental will eat up the rest of your budget.

The new .35 Whelen barrels are currently in queue at chambering. We might be able to leave one unchambered from the batch upon request. Unfortunately the barrels made their way through chambering yesterday. Depending on how quick this batch sells, we might be able to piggyback on the next batch if there is sufficient demand for the .35 Whelen model. I do not have an ETA on the next batch at this time.

Criterion says they will be.
You don't need a pull through reamer to ream a barrel but it is the easiest way.
Pacific does make a pull through reamer, I have one.

Like any cartridge, it's about shot placement. I have taken an Elk and three Deer at over 300 yards with my Mini-G in 35 Whelen. I have also missed a simple shot on a Mule Deer and Aoudad Sheep at 200 yards. The Deer was moving and the Sheep I miscalculated the range by 100 yards (thought it was 300 yards after it moved but it moved straight up a cliff side thus not changing the range) :( So goes hunting I guess. I've also taken a shot on a Mule Deer at 500 yards and hit it low on the front leg. I knew that range but just didn't have the practice I needed at that range (My friend Dan ended up getting that Deer after a long stalk). Then you have multiple animals I've taken at under 100 yards where stuff just dies, now. At under 100 yards I am so extremely confident with my Whelen that I call head shots and I don't miss, not ever.

My 35 G is topped with a center mounted 3x9 Nikon on a base similar to the M14.CA except that my mount has a tapped front end at the receiver collar. On this this little stuff, including the Elk, I use Hornady SP in 200 grains. I used to use a 250 grain handload with a Nosler partition loaded "hot" soon found the 200 grain was "all I needed" for the stuff I was hunting and it could be readily found at an inexpensive price.

I just remembered another Deer I missed with my 35. I was hunting with Sean and Dan in Wyoming. Deer was 315 yards ranged by Sean. We could have gotten much closer and done it easily but I was full of myself and wanted to go long. My problem was the rest, I chose to stand and take the shot on a monopod. I might as well have had no rest at all. I missed that deer 5 times! Hunting can be humbling!
