Yes they can, but you need different oprods.

If the BM 59 gas cylinder would need the BM 59 op rod on a Garand barrel, would the lock and screw have to be BM 59 as well? I am always looking for something a bit different and as I have little chance of owning a 59 here in Canada it might be challenging to try and build up a reasonable facsimile.

You would need a 3" BM59 muzzle break, see if standard parts has them. If you are going full length you need to bend a standard oprod straight, not as easy as it sounds.

Thanks. Rarely is it that anything is as easy as it sounds!

e.g. Crown molding. What could go wrong? ;)

Tim,
If I may ask on this thread....can you "bend" an op rod "straight". Say if I wanted a full length Garand with a BM59 GC?

Believe it or not, I can but it's a bear. Longer oprods are tougher to do this with than a short rod.

There are 2 types of BM59's. The BM59-E Argentine model, which were imported as parts kits by Sarco , which were converted from standard USGI M1's by cutting down the barrel (provided with kit) , op rod, rear handguard, Stock & spring 1/2 inch to convert them to 7.62 NATO.
The second type is the Alpine Model, imported by a company in Florida, with takes a 19 5/16 barrel (not provided with kit) with the gas port 3 1/2 from the muzzle.
This takes a short, straight op rod, & a slide-on gas cylinder with a bipod, & a tricompensator, & gas plug with an Allen set screw setting.
The stocks, rear handguard, mail spring, op rod, & gas cylinder of this model are not interchangeable with the Argentine Model.
