came across this while looking for a stripped receiver today. its no good for a rifle build but the heel mark is interesting. any guesses to what the heel portion was from? a type 5? something else?

Hmm, that entire heel was welded on to the receiver. No idea what it says though.

Japanese and the number 731 ....

Might as well call that the bad juju Garand.

There's probably an interesting story behind that rifle. But without that story, it's just a rewelded barrelled receiver with lots of wear and pitting that someone is asking $175 for.

Looks like a very expensive paperweight.

The sights and gas cylinder appear to be wrong for a Type 4 (5), based on the limited research I did this morning.

Complete fake fantasy piece.

Not regarding this particular piece,,,,but 'back in the day' it was not uncommon to 'create' something that would attract a buyer with limited research options.----in my opinion. The internet giving people a quick way to evaluate and fact check items makes it a lot harder today. But then, I state the obvious.
